I agree. That's why I put on my resume that I applied, but it was a "mutual decision" that I should not join.

In a way, it was a mutual decision. After they slapped a restraining order on me, I decided that I did not need them.

So, who wants to join Wensa?

Did they get their TI-83 back in the settlement?

And what are the requirements for Wensa? I have both a masters and an Indiana Jones Fan Club compass ring--is that enough?

No. See, the judge said, "Mr. Werbert, I don't trust you any farther than you can throw that calculator." So I threw it at him. The next judge kept the calculator.

I might think about letting you in. Are you dumber than a bag of rocks? That is the maximum intelligence level.

I actually qualify based on my GRE scores.

However, I don't really know what benefits MENSA membership would give me so I haven't done anything about it. If anyone can give me a reason to join I'd like to hear it. I'd like to make friends that are my equals as far as intelligence goes, but I don't know if they are going to turn out to be self-important as*holes. That sort of makes me nervous.

I recall a scene in one of the movie sequels to "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" in which a character refers to a Playboy article on "The Women of Mensa". The article appeared in the November 1985 issue. I think a couple of the models had cameo appearances.

FWIW, a web store has posted a copy of the cover:

Ha, I wish. I definitely don't have a high enough IQ for that.

It appears I qualify based on IQ, however I don't think I'd join. I doubt I'd fit it anyhow. In school I was labeled "gifted-disabled". I have multiple learning disabilities, but a high IQ to compensate.

Met one of the founders Lance Ware. Even though my IQ is not high enough he said he had a test that would get me in...due to our conversation he felt sure I could be a member ...what crap I told him. And no one could tell me what the cut off IQ score was. Felt like I was in a group of really dysfunctional people...more schizo than aspie.

Thank you.....ALL of you. I have these bursts of inspiration to try new things....but in the end, I end up researching my way out of committing to them.

This time, all I had to do was read everyone's posts! (not really)

Actually, I had already made up my mind not to sign up, just because I'm not willing to drive 50 miles once a month to meet with two or three "smart" people over drinks. I went to the Mensa website, and that is EXACTLY what they say a monthly meeting usually consists of.

Let's see. $100 (approx mensa fee) + $25 (gas) + $40 (drinks & dinner) + $80 (hotel room, I don't drink & drive) = $245 per month.

How is THAT smart?

Also, the more I drink, the lower my tolerance is for people who have low tolerances of not-like-minded people. Understand? How about, "I hate people who diss others who aren't like themselves." That's better. It didn't quite make sense the first time.

I KNOW I wouldn't fit in with Mensa people. I'd be constantly questioning THEIR intelligence, not my own. Not because I think I'm superior, but because they would think that THEY were superior to others. That's not cool.

Anyway! Thanks for the chat!

:o)en

Isn't the fee for joining MENSA just $52 a YEAR? So it would really only be about $150/per month. Still quite high for sitting around in a bar with a bunch of nerds, but about half of what you figured.

if ƒc is the cost, then

sumƒc=(annual fee/12)+(hotel+drinks+gas)
sumƒc=(52/12)+(80+25+40)
sumƒc=4.33+145
sumƒc=149.33/month

I was a member for a few years, but quit when I realized I'd never derive anything useful from it.
Most of the other members were loser, underemployed balding-but-ponytailed male virgins who lived with their parents. These Simpson´s Comic Book Guy clones would prattle
incessantly about how brilliant they were. Ugh. Revolting. Especially since their arrogance was completely unfounded.

I thought the first version made perfect sense.

I have developed a rule for such situations.
I used to do nothing, but now:
    A: I give them one clear, verbal warning.
    B: When they do it again, I leave.

It usually surprises them.
Note: B almost invariably follows very briefly after A.

I was! Claim to fame, I joined at around five years old and was the youngest member of Mensa for a few months, until some kid a couple of months younger than me got in.

Honestly though I thought the whole thing was a waste of my precious five-year-old time.

WOW, I'm more glad than ever I never applied. I always thought it a bit pretentious, and most that I met that claimed to be in mensa were arrogant and probably not that smart. I did meet some that seemed nice and probably were smart. THEY are probably, like most of you guys, the first to leave though.

Having a good aptitude, skillset, etc... Doesn't necessarily make you a good person or mean you have good ideas, or can get along with others, though. 8-(

I could join Mensa (I have an IQ of 156) but wouldn't for two reasons:
1. My abilities and intelligence are important to me not membership to an organization or a piece of paper telling me how intelligent I am.
2. IQ tests don't really test for intelligence. They test for certain types of problem solving and logic abilities. It's not the same thing as intelligence. The faith people put in IQ is quite amazing considering that intelligence as a concept is poorly understood and its measurement is so primitive.

I don't need a piece of paper or membership to an exclusive organization to feel superior to the idiots out there.

This makes me feel rather ill.

As I understand it, IQ = 100 * "Mental age" / "Chronological age", where "Mental age" is some concept in the tester's imagination.

Below the age of about 10, I had the impression that IQ has been show to be a pretty meaningless figure, as it has an enormous variance and is not at all consistent with a child's later development.

So Mensa take kids "out of the cradle" as members, then? Do they then throw them out when it transpires, after a few years, that their earlier score was just a "phase" in their development. Gross. I fart in their general direction.
