We make them look stupid by knowing all the right answers and by our book-learning :study: . They hate us for this. And what people hate  , they fear. What they fear :pale: , they destroy. :bom:

I think a lot of "uneducated" people (as measured by social class/occupation) don't like intellectuals because the poorer people assume intellectuals get to spend literally ALL their time "thinking" and almost no time "working".

That could be part of it. Or, as one of my former subordinates put it: "... you always think of more work for me to do, and you never do any work yourself ..."

Well ... that's why I am the boss - to tell others what to do!

And to fire them, when necessary.

I see a lot of anti-intellectualism on this forum.

I have only read the first and last page of this forum because I was too lazy to read everyone's reply. From communicating with people about intelligence and smart people, as well as through my experience, I have observed the following. Some of this may have already been stated and will be repeated:

1. There are a lot of people who have a fear of intelligent people and intelligent conversations and sometimes it makes them feel inferior to the person who is perceived as smart.
2. Along the lines of the first observation, NT's usually have a broader range of interests compared to Aspies/Auties. As pointed out earlier in one of the posts I read in this thread, there are people who get impatient with people who babble on and on about their intense interests. As an Aspie, i get bored listening to someone babble on about something that does not interest me either or after I have lost interest in the conversation. I also react the same way an NT does in these situations: I look for a way out or change the subject
3. Although there are people that are not afraid of intelligent people, I have had one person make it clear to me that they do not like it when a smart person acts condescending towards them and treats them like they are stupid for not knowing something.
4. Kind of goes along with everything I have stated, but whether you are an intellectual thinker or not, noone likes to feel stupid or be called stupid. Everyone has their ego and they don't like having it bruised.

In that respect, Aspies have much in common with Enties -- a dislike of anyone they can't BS.

In the US anti-intellectualism has it's roots in the 1830s fusion of Jacksonian populism and evangelical religion which later mixed with a hysterical anti-science attitude caused by the publishing of The Origin of Species. Aditionally, there is a mentality common in right-wing teabagger circles that rails against "pointy-headed liberal intellectual elites", thinking that intellectuals are a technocratic ruling class who are anti-God and want to hand the counter over to the UN.

I thought it was just all the dropouts, slackers, and drunks who hated us because we know how to be more successful with forty minutes of mind-expanding thought than they can with forty hours of back-breaking labor.

And then we don't invite them to our parties, unless it's to serve the guests and clean up afterwards.
