I make clicking noises, make all sorts of "gah", "grah", "guh" noises, and uh... sometimes I death metal growl under my breath.

I always have completely random words going through my brain, though, and I am afraid that some day I am going to yell one of them. I'll stub my toe and yell, "ANTARCTICA!", "DOG!" or "DENTAL FLOSS!" and people will be like... "Uhhh, what?"

I often grunt or growl (like Young Frankenstein when he hears the violin) or clear my throat. If I'm in a good mood, I might sing a perfect fifth interval. If I'm tired and drift off, I will mutter and repeat a phrase out loud, which gets me into no end of trouble at work.

I have a tic on the right side of my face. I do not vocalize sounds loudly as I do it but it has been diagnosed as a subtle form of tourettes. I does not bother me a great deal, I only really notice it when I look in the mirror, but sometimes I may suddenly shout out words that make no sense at all like "GOD'S-A-DOG!!" totally behond my control. Usually when I am under stress.

Dopey doh..dopey doh...dopey dopey dopey doh....that is one of my repteated phrases that has been going on for a while.
It occasionally changes...I don't think I have tourettes though..I can control it if I want to buy why try?

This is very interesting to me, I am in the process of having my Son diagnosed with I think Aspergers. He is eight and has always got into terrible trouble at school for shouting out in classs, making noises and speaking in a babyish tone of voice. He has become even worse lately as he is being badly bullied (which is a whole other story) but does this 'stim' become worse when you are under pressure or anxious. His teacher is convinced he is deliberately trying to provoke him but I know Sam couldn't stop it if his life depended on it

Absolutely. Stress makes it much worse. Bullying totally does it. Also, if I'm consciously aware or someone at work has noticed my odd behavior, I feel more pressure to "act normal" which is stressful and causes new quirks. I feel like I'm being watched, when I'm obviously not. But being the center of attention is very bad. The teacher telling him to stop is doing more harm. The poor kid sounds like he is under terrible pressure. It makes me want to stim just thinking about it!

I guessed it was. I told his teacher that Sam is under terrible pressure at the moment, and that I thought his anxiety was bubbling over into even more extreme behaviour than before. I am sick of having to defend Sam against theses narrow minded, adult bullies, posing as teachers. They have written him off academically, even though I know he could wipe the floor with the rest of his class put together, and are determined to think the worst of him.

I am so relieved to have been shown this website, its so great to be able to see people talking about the same things we have been experiencing, and being given constructive advice. It was here that I was told for the first time to stop telling Sam to stop making those noises, and that he needed to make them. That had never occured to me before and now I feel completely relaxed about it, I think all teachers should be compulsorarily made to read this forum.

Can I ask what does 'stim' mean. I have read all the posts with great interest, my eldest has a vocal tic which is a snorting noise and has said not to mention it as it makes it worse, and because its an unusual noise its somehow easier to ignore, it is definitely worse when he is anxious or stressed.

My younger son shouts out phrases and makes a VERY LOUD yeeeeeeeaalllllllllllll sound which makes you jump out of your skin, and the phrases always sound like it mus be off the simpsons or south park or maybe even a lyric from a wrap song. It is much more annoying and difficult to ignore, he also asks me to copy him sometimes which is really bizarre, but I think he finds it funny and it makes him laugh, and lets face it laughter is good.

I once read an interesting article about ASD and the crossing of symptoms with other disorders such as tourettes, OCD, anxiety disorders, etc. They were making the argument that the areas of the brain affected by autism are also areas affected in those disorders, which I think is pretty believable.

I don't have tourettes, but I definitely have tourettes-like symptoms. I once talked with a guy with tourettes and how he described it was very similar to my experience. He said (and I feel this way as well with my tics) that it's not something uncontrollable, at least with him, as he has mild tourettes, and it's more like an itch. You can hold off on scratching it, but you need to give in eventually.
My biggest tic that fits that description is sort of like waving my fingers in front of my eyes. It's hard to explain. It's waving fingers quickly + sharply exhaling until I have no more air. It really does feel like an "itch." I can hold off for quite a long time, but eventually I have to go to another room or something to get it out of my system lol.

ME TOO! All of my tics are based on rhythms. 8s are the best, then 4s, then 7s, 3s... but I really like 8s. That's why music makes my tics so bad!
