For those of you who got Asperger Syndrome as a result of birth trauma; Would you sue the hospital for negligence?

You'd have to know that's what caused it I think, and for those of us born 20, 30 yrs ago or more that'd be kind of hard to determine IMO. I know I suffered trauma at birth but doubt it was the fault of the hospital. I caught the umbilical cord on my shoulder and ripped the placenta off the uterine wall and came out blue in the face. While I'd love to get rich off that, I think I was just messing up social interactions from day one, lol.

I'm doing some investigation into my birth. They should have done a c-section right away, not waited for 30 hours.

What basis is there that supports one can acquire AS from birth trauma?

1/3 of Aspies reported that they were oxygen deprived at birth.

Birth is inherently traumatic for the baby. It's very stressful for both mother and baby. This just seems another grasp at a straw.

My birth was relatively fast and effortless. I know because my doctor thought he had time to go eat and just as he was leaving, they had to call him back because I was on my way, ready or not! I was born just a few minutes after noon, right in time for lunch. No hypoxia. I was born anemic though. Probably genetic, as it's been a chronic thing all my life.

Actually I've read that half of all people with Asperger's had oxygen loss at birth.

I can't sue the hospital because I was born at home and my dad delivered me.

Can I open this topic up again to everyone as we are currently in the process of legal action against the hospital after our son was starved of oxygen at birth due to negligence. What are peoples thoughts????

Thanks

Well I don't know if this is specifically what caused the AS but I did have the birth cord wrapped around my neck and was losing oxegen in the womb so they had to do an emergency surgery to get me out. From what I have heard it was not really neglect on anyones part it would have been neglect if they had not done anything but they did all they could in that situation.

So yeah even if I knew without a doubt that was the cause, I would not be wanting to sue anyone over it.

I read that about schizophrenia I think it was...not sure if that's relevent to anything, but AS would not be the only disorder that has been said about.

If it was legitimate negligence then you should take legal action, but if it was something no one had any way of preventing then I would be against trying to sue anyone over it as accidents do sometimes happen. But if it was definatly because of negligence then go for it.

My mum didn't have any birth traumas at all, and no birth difficulties. So we've always believed that this cruel Autism thing I've got is caused by bad luck.

I was premature as an infant. When I came out my lungs where not fully developed. I stopped breathing and had to be hooked up to a machine for a couple of days. They placed cerebral shunts into my forehead. From what I herd it caused blood vessels in my head to rupture. I remember going through grade school as a extremely shy, quiet and anxious kid because I just did'nt know how to interact. I started talking more with people after high school when I entered the workworld, though I come off as extremely odd and eccentric individual and can't relate much to people. I was diagnosed as AD/HD and a reading/math LD in the third grade. At 24 I got a therapist to verbally diagnose me as having asperger's after showing her my somewhat unique and uncanny autistic like cognitive profile from an IQ test I got at 12. Most of the therapists I have been to don't believe this is a real disorder. One therapist told me that with true asperger's theres no eye contact and another kept insisting on narcissism...

Huh, I never knew there was research into this.

I was born about six weeks prematurely; my mother was in her 40s when she had me, and they had to deliver me via C-section because my mom had an infection that threatened both me and her. As a result of my early birth, like Beautifulovempty, my lungs were not fully developed, so I was oxygen for a time after birth. My mom describes how I was stuck with needles constantly for various tests.

I had some later problems as an infant and a toddler. I had two surgeries before I was a year old--one to fix a hernia problem; another to remove a cyst from my chest that developed after one of the doctors stuck me with a needle there. I had another surgery when I was 4 years old to correct Strabismus (cross-eyedness); incidentally, I still remember what I was wearing that day (a gray sweatshirt) and what the weather was like (overcast). I was an anxious kid for as long as I can remember, with a whole host of odd phobias, and looking back, I've always been quirky and shy, to put it mildly. I loved traffic signals as a young kid. :P

My mom could have sued the hospital but she didn't because she wanted to move on and enjoy being a new mother. She had a horrible OB doctor. I got stuck due to being in the wrong position so I wouldn't come out and I got so stressed, I pooped in the uterus. If it weren't for the doctor pulling me out using forceps? I would have died. But I got sick from it so I was in the care unit. But I was a normal baby until I started getting ear infections and fevers. My parents said I was a quiet baby and barely even cried and I loved being held. Then when I started to get sick, that was when the problems started. It resulted in hearing loss and then a speech delay and other problems. My mom thinks all that is what caused me to be on the autism spectrum. She thinks autism can be environmental and mine was from being sick a lot as an infant and hearing loss is what resulted in my brain being wired differently and causing me to learn differently and process information differently. Other doctors have said this was all a coincidence. It could be since aspie traits seem to run in my family. Plus learning disabilities and anxiety runs in my family too and depression since I have relatives with it. My dad has ADHD and I have a cousin with it too. Speech problems also run in my family since my uncle had to do speech therapy as a kid and so did one of my cousins.

But when my brother was born, he was so big, he got stuck on his way being delivered. The doctor was going to either cut something down there my mother wouldn't be able to have more children, or cut a bone in my brother's shoulder he would be paralyzed in that arm for life. But he flew right out after my mother kept on pushing. I am not sure if this was a trauma birth but he turned out normal.

My mother says she should have had a c section for both of these births. My brother and I were both past out due dates when we were born. I was 12 days late and my brother was about ten days late.
