I have to fondle the fruit and veg in the supermarket before buying it. Possibly an AS trait maybe just an odd fetish

But seriously I have the urge to touch unfamiliar things all the time. Especially new food items and glass and furry things.
I have to smell food before using it too.

I need to touch something that has switches, buttons, or just soft or spikey things. I think it's a tic, but I'm not sure. This is kind of how I relieve it, by touching a computer keyboard or syringe.

I'm 25 and I still touch everything

I like to rub things that have rough textures too like carpet. But some textures totally freak me out, so like I have to be careful not to touch it in a store if it looks like something that will freak me out lol.

I'm obsessed with some book covers, especially when embossing and/or the transition between gloss and matte are present. Fabrics and furry/fluffy things are my downfall, though. I always end up touching things when I'm shopping for clothes with my girlfriend, or when we go to the fabric shop to get her some sewing supplies. I could live in that shop

There are textures I just can't stand, but I try to avoid those.

Any squishy or rubbery substance — gel shoe inserts, for example. When I pass them in the store I have to give them a poke or a squeeze, and I never feel as if I've poked or squeezed quite hard enough. I've ruined plenty of stress balls that way, by digging my fingers into them way too hard.

Oh my gosh I love that section!! And rubbing them if they are new too lol (old tires are too dirty). Shoe stores too :D

Silky smooth and rubbery stuff are good too, I am almost constantly touching may hair (the silky, smooth part).

But like microfiber stuff, or like dry fuzzy stuff like that totally freaks me out :?

I've always liked to feel objects and textures. Linen and housewares stores are especially fun, what with the towels and sheets and rugs and pillows and such. I'll get the occasional "what are you doing??" questions from others.

Yes!! I love playing with the gel shoe inserts. The gel writstrests for use while using a computer mouse are fun, too. I've been known to fiddle with those for hours.

I am definitely into tactile exploration.
Here is a small list of things I cannot resist touching/feeling:

+ Those fuzzy dusters that can be found in the supermarket
+ Gel candles - I cannot resist poking/ shoving my fingers into them
+ Gel insoles
+ Metal
+ Rust
+ Concrete
+ Fur (though I prefer it on the animal)
+ Buttons (which can be problematic when working with machines that have large control panels)
+ Embossed or engraved surfaces
+ Brushed polyester (what they make those fuzzy blankets with)
+ Sand
+ Jagged rocks
+ Onionskin paper
+ Koosh balls

I might be mistaken, but I strongly suspect a fascination with the tactile quality of objects is an example of preoccupation with 'non-functional' parts of objects.

Could be. I thought that was one of the few AS traits I didn't have. Once again, I'm wrong,

I'm a BIGTIME toucher. Whenever I go clothes shopping (actually, that's pretty rare, since I HATE clothes shopping!) the first thing I go for is fabric. If something is itchy or rough or otherwise weird-feeling I'm not going to buy it. My favorite feelings are flowing soft fabrics such as silks and satins; furry plushy things like fuzzy blankets and stuffed animals, and there are some buttery-smooth leathers and suedes that are wonderful to pet on. My skin even has some spots that are especially smooth, and I'll sit and wring my hands after I've washed them or put on lotion because they feel so smooth and soft.

Oddly enough, glass is something else I love to touch. It's so perfecly smooth with no defects that I could stroke it for hours. And finally -- does anyone know what Teflon tape is? It's the white tape plumbers use to get a good seal on pipe threads. I LOVE that stuff! It is just so silky smooth, it gives me shivers to run my fingers up and down a strip of it.

A couple of people mentioned smells as well. Yes, I am extremely sensitive in a negative way to chemical smells, soaps and cigarette smoke. But also, I'll smell stuff that shouldn't even have a smell! Things like vases or plastic flowers or figurines. I guess it's just another way to explore an item.
