Would you want to be cured if you could?

I am the same as others that have said about getting rid of some things but staying who I am. Some NTs can be very accepting of our social difficulties, sensory sensitivities etc. Some can genuinely like us because we are different and entertaining. I find it is our inflexibility that can be the main problem and you can't really blame them. Change in routine is also distressing for us so I think curing that trait would be beneficial. Also our dislike for small talk I would change. Some NTs can have no problem with someone who has difficulty identifying sarcasm, figurative language, boredom, body language etc. but struggle with someone who dislikes small talk. After all how do you have a conversation with someone who unintentionally switches off to their side of the conversation? I would even keep my sensory pain if I could cure those to and that is saying something. However if there was no case of keeping some traits and getting rid of others it just came down to a choice I would keep my autism and not take the cure. It makes me who I am and there are many positives which I think out do the negative. Autism makes life more difficult and distressing but I like a challenge. Classic autism is a different category altogether though and I would cure that.

No because I think ASD has made me unique and sometimes more successful. For example because I'm obsessed with this game that not a lot of people like, I eventually got involved in the development of the game. I wonder if being happy with having this disability has to do with my philia of people with disabilities... or do I even have one?l

Yes ASD made me live a harsher life but again there are many stories of people who experience big life problems and end up having a better life in the end. Or at least be somewhat useful to the world. That is if you choose the right choices.

I have actually recorded all of the data and comments into a document called "Autistics Speak." I will likely carry on this poll to other sources to gather more data on the thoughts of the community.

I voted yes. The only qualification would be "as long as I could keep my writing skills". I don't see my aspie-ism as part of my identity but more as a prison in which my identity exists. For me a cure would make the difference between living my life rather than just existing, with continual anxiety about when and what I'm going to f**k up next. Yes yes yes. I wish.

I think I´m a good person, and I believe that aspies live very interesting lives (a lot of cruel stuff in it but also many insights and impressions). My life would be certainly much easier if I weren´t an aspie but I feel like my morality is a result of my autism. Sometimes I feel like people should learn how to treat each other from me instead I should learn from them ( hope it doesn´t sound smug). Kind of makes me think about hypothetical community containing only aspies - don´t dare to guess how it would work.

No. I wouldn't want a cure for my autism. I am happy with being autistic, and I don't desire to be NT. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses regardless of being autistic or not. Each person has a right to their opinion on this topic, and I would choose to remain autistic.

No, it made me for who I am today.

I like being autistic except for the communication part, so no. Imagine if everybody was autistic. Life would be better, no more lies and corruption from the our autisitc gov't.

Yes. I really don't feel like I'd be losing anything of myself if I were "cured". I don't consider my mental shortcomings to be fundamentally a part of me. How could I, when I desperately want to be rid of them?

Yes. It would allow me to see social cues and be more normal.

Yes. I'd trade 50 IQ points, my health, or a lot of other attributes for being socially clueful and charming.

No, but if I could find a cure for my anxiety I would say yes to that. If my ASD could be cured I would still have the anxiety because it is a result of all my life experiences as a person with ASD in an NT world. At this point if my ASD was cured I would probably go nuts. My ASD is the best part of who I am.
