Interesting points, zer0netgain.

Later in the thread I I think I may have figured out a way to avoid this problem because we can make it known that we are looking for aspie traits The more we define what aspie traits are the more we can make that our criteria for the positions we want filled. Just like the NTs have made their businesses custom built for NT traits...

I heard of a few businesses that only hire autistic people.

They are started by NTs.

Apparently, it is OK for them only to hire autistic people.

I was thinking an autistic person could start this kind of business too.

I am thinking of starting one myself, if I can find time over the next year or so.

One thing about this kind of business might be dropping requirement for formal education, since many autistic people have skills that they learned themselves, while they struggled in formal education and lack degrees, so if they can demonstrate their skills through a trial process, then they can be hired without any degree.

What if we here at the"wrong planet" and other aspie groups joined together and created a business or businesses catering to people on the autism spectrum?

First of all would this be deemed ethical or would it be considered discrimination?

As an aspie myself I feel I am truly capable of great things... but because my weaknesses were ignored for so long and festered I am dysfunctional in many areas... and my past is so littered with failure it's difficult for me to even try to get a job now.

But what if we aspies formed companies that dealt with our shortcomings and benefited from our great strengths...

One other issue - how do we determine who are true aspies? Many people could claim they are. In my case I had very unbalanced results at school... I was terrible at doing homework but scored very high on tests. In my case this would be a good indicator. I was also especially bad at algebra.. this could be a key indicator.

Maybe we could get aspie references... lol.. like "anti references" where we call people's employers or teachers and find out how the failed aspie employee had certain "bad" aspie traits?

I truly think this method could solve so many problems for our community... who better to fix this mess than aspies? We should be able to find some great solutions for our weaknesses too and exploit all our strengths. Maybe we could get some key aspie leaders to help our cause?

In the US (and I suspect many other countries too) that would probably violate anti-discrimination laws.

As the disabled are a minority, hiring only disabled would probably not meet the test to declare it "discrimination" as the disabled are not adequately represented in the workforce.

Reverse discrimination becomes an issue when you have no problem with proportional representation in the workforce and you pass over well-qualified people of the majority to hire inferior qualified minorities.

I'm not sure that is correct. I believe there have been many successful reverse discrimination law suits.

Anyways, are you going to refuse to hire another disabled worker who did not have ASD? Because that would certainly be discrimination of an underrepresented minority.

They're building micro-apartments all over the country that are similar in design of the micro house. Interestingly, because of the neighborhood they're in, their monthly rents are still high ($600 to $900). I've lived in my car for years. It was inconvenient as hell. I think if I had a conversion van or something big enough to shower in (an RV?) then a $10/hr job wouldn't be so bad.

8O $850 a month for one small room and a bathroom, and she has to walk down four flights of stairs to use a shared kitchen? Thats disgusting. Freaking greedy developers. All they care about is making housing smaller and smaller, to cram as many units into as small a space as possible, and charge as much money as possible for it. When they get too expensive for most people to afford, they will just make them even smaller, and then make the tenants share bathrooms as well as kitchens.

'Specialisterne' (The Specialists) is a company that employs Aspies. They started out in Denmark some years ago and have now expanded globally. Check out Specialisterne.com

Great find!

If this can be done there is no reason aspies should be unemployed to such a high degree in the US.

I have new idear for autistic business: Making and selling animal hybrid figurines.

I really like photoshops of different animals onto each other, like a cat-face penguin.

They are really adorable to me, and I would like to collect some good quality animal hybrid figurines.

That's a good idea, btbnnyr. I think that would be an excellent thing for aspies to do - sculpting and art. And people could buy stuff knowing that they are helping a cause - people who are trying to be productive. I will think about this and how we could maybe get it going.

There is also another concept...form a non-profit/not-for-profit (any profits are poured into reinvestment), and the "owner" takes a standard pay/benefit package like any other worker. Investors would be entitled to repayment of their investment plus interest, but that's capital expansion projects and not the payments of stock dividends.

Usually, non-profits and charities are exempt from strict construction of some rules. A charity or non-profit created to specifically employ the disabled (or a segment with a specific disability) would be fulfilling a mission by limiting who they hire.

I am self-employed, yet I am getting bored with my business. PLEASE count me in! I think your idea is fabulous! I have this thing that has happened to me, for the past 20 years, where, many of my dreams have consisted of super cool things that have not yet been invented, or at least I have not found anything like them. I began to write and sketch many of the items, a few years, ago, and thus far I have created (not marketed, however) a few of them. I designed and built a prototype of a lamp, and presently I am making 3 styles of (unisex) bags, out of a particular material, that I believe would be considered unique. This particular project has gotten me excited, as it is something that I can actually afford to market and produce, as long as I am smart about how I go about it.

I would very much like to be a part of whatever comes to fruition, with your business idea, and I would like to offer you my services, if needed. My education and background is in the field of design, in case you find someone like me might be an asset to you.

I am seriously craving change, & I think the new year is going to bring something super spectacular for all of us, here!

Edit: I neglected to mention, I have vast experience in business admin/admin assistance. Haven't had a minute to read through the thread. I hope I got the premise of your post, correct:))

Hi Gamer. No I did not design it, however, I have done a lot of interior design projects. It is a 1959 Buff, Straub and Hensman, in Arcadia, California. Nice that you find it attractive. I am obsessed with Mid Century Modern Architecture. Architecture being my No. 1 special interest. . . Not that you need to know that:).
