All of the time, especially in my youth. For example, saying "
I can't throw a lateral pass more than 20 yards" was perceived by my uber-macho construction-worker relatives as "
I'm no good at anything poor poor me!". So instead of teaching me how to throw that damn football, they told me I was a loser and that I'd never amount to anything.
Stupid drunks ... now they're all dead, and I'm living well in California on an engineer's salary.
