I suspect there are different genes in people that make some people respond well on a paleo diet while in other folks it would clog their arteries [like myself]. my cholesterol numbers didn't go down until I ditched most animal products. I have the sneaking suspicion that the Japanese might be on the right track with their blood type-based dietary recommendations [type O = mainly carnivore, type A = mainly veggie, type B and AB = omnivore].

I haven't posted here in quite a long while.

Anyway I think this topic is very interesting. I never really linked my weird food and eating habits with my Aspergers.

Some things that others have mentioned I also do. I'm not hugely picky about what foods I eat. However I do eat in strange ways.

The few foods I'm picky about are onions, peppers, tomatoes and carrots. There are probably more.

I will eat jalapeno peppers if they are in poppers or if they have been canned. Here it is kind of a tradition to can them with chopped sausage or hot dog pieces in a red sauce. Sometimes cauliflower is added. Not sure what its called but I generally like it. However I will not eat jalapeno in anything else.
I hate bell peppers and onions. However I will eat them only if they are stir fried til they are squishy.
I refuse to eat tomatoes or carrots if they are cooked. But I do like them raw.

When eating I usually face the biggest food towards me. Such as meat towards me and sides up top. I eat each food clockwise. My family used to comment on this when I was a kid but no one really thought anything of it.
When I eat a sandwich or hamburger I eat around it. Turning it round and round as I eat. I like flipping hamburgers upside down. I don't know why.
I used to always eat the topping off of pizza before eating the crust. Or I scrape the topping off, eat the crust and then the topping. As an adult I don't do this as often anymore.

As for drinking I do tend to only drink from the same side of the cup each time. I also keep that side of the cup facing towards me. I guess that helps me remember which side I drank from. I will also drink from a side away from any imperfections in the cup.

When I go out to eat at a fast food place and the food comes in wrappers, I always flatten them out before eating. Once I'm finished I neatly fold them before throwing them away. My boyfriend finds this very odd and has mentioned it a few times.

I do usually eat fast. But always thought it was left over from my school years. I was badly bullied by a group of boys in high school. We had an hour for lunch. So I would get to the lunch room as fast as I could so I could be one of the first to get my food. Then I would eat it as fast as possible so that I could retreat to sit in front of my locker for a few moments of peace before my bullies finished eating and came to torment me.

I do hunch over my plate. But I'm bad about dropping food and don't like getting it on me.

That's all I can really think of at the moment.

Also I get choked a lot while eating. Not badly choked. Just that I get pieces of food stuck and end up clearing my throat a lot throughout the meal. Not sure why that is.

Unless it's a carbohydrate when I eat I have to eat it slow or I'll gag and maybe throw up (Happened to me twice), But people always laugh and say "Eat faster." I can't! I do the hunching thing I think too and I was always a picky eater. I'm sure there are more I can't think of right now. Also I can't handle drinks that are too cold. I often have to let it sit or add a little hot water to it.

Yes, the crust has to go first! Any other way of eating is clearly wrong. :P

Another example of what is correct behaviour.

Also, I will do certain things with certain foods.
When I have a burger, first I open the burger to put in extra ketchup and dressing, on both sides. Then I close it up and re-wrap it. Then I eat all the fries, then I eat the burger.
If I eat anything with potatos, I have to mush the potato and mix with the sauce.

I do that too.

I am still resentful of how in kindergarten when I wanted chocolate milk at snack time they refused to give it to me and said it was only for the higher grades. They would only give me regular milk which I would not drink (probably 2% milk too. :eew: In my house we only buy the regular milk)
I was terrified to drink chocolate milk. I didn't drink chocolate milk until I was almost an adult.

I can't stand the texture of eggs or of things with egg-like textures. It makes me immediately start dry heaving.

I hate the texture of pork. It's like halfway between meat and rubber.

I hate the texture of most fish.

I hate the texture of ground beef, and of steak.

I hate the texture of macadamia nuts and chickpeas.

I dislike mixing certain textures(like putting nuts or nut pieces into almost any foods, unless the foods themselves are also crunchy).

I almost always hate artificial sweeteners, like sucralose/Splenda. Splenda has an awful aftertaste, like alcohol.

I will not eat anything if it does not smell like food. Things like tv dinners and many pre-prepared things marketed as food often don't smell like food. They smell like chemicals, so I'm scared to eat them.

I eat things in order. If I'm eating something with visible pieces of different foods(like chicken and rice) I will pick out all of the pieces of each food before starting with the next food.

I do that also [to save the yummy inner parts for last], and I also have to be careful or else I get stuff down the wrong pipe, especially if it is sweet, for some unknown reason.

Eating hunched over ones' food and eating fast is a institutionalized thing to do.

The person is hunched over (those protecting their food from others) and eating fast would be a type of survival instinct for certain personality types in prisons to mental hospitals depending on what types of wards/other patients.

Some bad places would allow others' to steal others food, or only allow short periods of time to eat.

I have always been a fast eater. I do not eat "proper".
It sounds like the OP stepmom was very particular about eating habits...

I'm sorry your cholesterol went down. Now you are more prone to alzheimer's, diabetes and a lot of other chronic ailments. I highly recommend eating more animal products to get your cholesterol back up into the safe range. Shoot for the total range of about 240-260, with very high HDL and low trigs. This is the sweet spot for longevity.

I have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and stroke I have to think about. my total cholesterol was measured as 350 [with HDL <40] before the lifestyle changes [elimination of refined carbs and saturated fats] I had to make. also I am blood-type A which means a herbivorean diet [with some poultry and fish] is proper for me. now at least my total cholesterol if <200 and my HDL is >50.

I am a picky eater and as a kid ate food one bite at the time from each category (meat, veggie, starch). I cannot swallow some soft slippery food and have a gag reflex. It used to piss my mom off but I could not get certain food down. I cannot eat seafood unless Salmon cook well done. I cannot eat grisly meat and hated my mom's pot roast. I cannot eat overly ripe fruit. Regarding taste I cannot eat odd flavor foods in some vegetables, cheese, processed meats like most salami. I don't like milk unless in cereal. Smells set me off too. Seafood is terrible.

I always have to clear my throat after a meal too. Never knew why. As far as pizza goes and burgers for ages I would only eat the bread not the meat or topping. So my parents when ordering a Mc Donalds had to ask for a cheese burger without the cheese or the burger. They had to ask in that way.
I began to eat pizza with tomato sauce after I dreamed about eating it that way. Before that I made my parents scrape everything off. The same happened with the cheese then eventually the toppings. Now I can happily say I am a fully fledged pizza eater. :P
Don't mind beef burgers now either but steak is way too rubbery.
As I said before there was a period of a couple of years where I ate nothing but cereal.
Don't eat vegetables. I did eat them for a little while- trying to be healthier but I put up with it. Now I'm gone back to hating the texture. Mushrooms used to remind me of the texture of an eye ball.

I absolutely love chocolate milk. Always cheers me up. They say it's the ideal thing to drink after exercise too. The protein in the milk and the sugar in the cocoa.

:D On that note it's time for some chocolate milk. :D

As a child I used to eat very loudly with my mouth wide open. It took my parents years to get me off of that. I eat EVERYTHING with apple sauce, I just didn't like the taste of food. I did this until I was 19 years old.

I eat WAAY to fast for my own good; my parents tell me to slow down when I eat too fast.

my older brother as a schoolboy, one time sucked his milk down too fast, and it came running out his nose.
