Could you please use another word other than ret*d? Just like we didn't choose to have AS, people didn't choose to be mentally ret*d. It shouldn't be used like that. :)

Sorry, I'm just used to using it! Okay, how about this: That is the most stupid thing I've ever read. ;)

Yay! Sorry if I offended you or anything. But I am a grump in the morning (7:31am)! :D

No, that's okay! It's 10:36 AM here and my friends called at, like, 9:00 so I'm dead tired, too! lol

Beautiful people like to be appreciated for their intelligence.
Intelligent people like to be appreciated for their good heart.
No one likes people who think they are more intelligent than the others.

I can understand how you'd think that. Honestly I think it's a defense mechanism that a lot of aspies have picked up over time. Many of us have learning disabilities or have been called "stupid" (amongst other names) all of our lives, and some of us began to think we really were stupid. Finding out later that you're not really dumb after all can be a big ego boost that some people might take too far. I've been guilty of it in the past. It's human nature.

I totally agree. I think people in general (aspies and NTs alike) need to learn to adopt a healthy sense of pride, not pure narcissism. Aspies can be egocentric (I know I am) because a lot of us live in our own little worlds, so it can be difficult to do this at times, but it's possible.

I agree - people tend to hit out at what they perceive to be the cause of their problems. For many with AS, who have often suffered bullying at school or been called stupid or lazy by family & acquaintances, the source of the antagonism appears to be the NT world.

I'm as guilty as the next person of hitting out at the NT world. It's usually after a particularly bad day when I've been making a real effort to fit into the "norm", and I can't understand why I can't get people to understand me.

I certainly do not feel superior to NTs, in fact, I often feel quite inferior to NTs. Everything, yes, everything, is a struggle for me. It often takes me 3 or 4 tries to leave my apartment because I am so caught up in my thoughts that I can’t remember what to take with me when I am leaving. I can forget the route to a destination that I have been to many times. I have a MLS degree and I am working on an Ed.D and every class is difficult for me. My NT classmates often remark about how easy classes are for them. There is not a single class that I have taken that has been easy for me.

Yes, with all the struggles I have associated with Asperger’s I often feel quite inferior to NTs. On the other hand, Asperger’s has made me who I am and, overall, I am quite happy with who I am.

I know more about cars than many people, but then they will know something else more than me. As much as I'd like to think that I am superior to anyone, I'm not.

I don't understand NT's a lot of the time, but that doesn't mean that they are inferior. Being an aspie has it's pros and cons, as does being NT. I can say, however, that I do not think I would want to be NT

To be TOTALLY reasonable, it asked if aspies were smarter than MOST NTs! ALSO, you can be smarter, and not superior. Some NTs may have more endurance, be stronger, faster, and even THINK faster than I do, and I couldn't say I am superior to them even if I happen to be smarter. I could ALSO never claim to be smarter than all of them, etc... ALSO, if there weren't some nice, smart, decent NTs, this world would be FAR worse than it is.

Superior in some ways, inferior in others.

Or as a local radio host is apt to put it, "better than most, not as good as some." :)

I would say (and did say upon diagnosis) that I think of it as being a situation where AS people have a great deal of power that is difficult to direct when compared with NTs.

We have fast, powerful cars with bad steering wheels and brakes.

With a lot of effort and work, I think the things achieved by someone with AS may match or exceed the great accomplishments of NTs.

But with an only average amount of effort, NTs outperform AS people in NT society.

It isn't really a competition though. (Or at least I hope it isn't.)

I don’t think so. There have been a lot of threads about how IQ is an academic measurement, and not indicative of intelligence. Is the doctor who smokes 3 packs a day intelligent? Is the PHD whose marriage and family are in tatters Intelligent? Was Mozart, with all his money management troubles, intelligent?

You can have high intelligence, with severe or mild autism. You can have low intelligence, with severe or mild autism. They are separate, not necessarily linked.

There have been several threads that state that Aspies don’t need to have an IQ in the 140’s. Anything in the normal ranges can help identify them with Asperger's.

LFA is generally associated with an IQ below 70. HFA with an IQ over 70. AS is similar to the HFA range. I don’t think an actual “number” has been applied. But you an have an IQ of 90 or 100, or 120 (or more), and have either HFA or AS. The biggest distinction between the two, is when you developed language, not IQ.

Many people can do very well in the academic world, yet have no common sense or problem solving skills.

Why the need to be superior? If you truly are superior you would not have to prove it.
