This is how it works for me. I fall asleep early while putting my son to bed (which means we're cramped into a twin bed together! Luckily he's still small...), then wake up after a few hours and can't get back to sleep. I'm too sleepy to actually get up, but can't fall asleep. So I stay in bed awake for a few hours before I can finally get back to sleep. Of course, I'm then exhausted when I wake up in the morning...

No insomnia, but I too have a weird sleep cycle. I might have insomnia if I were trying to sleep at a particular time every night, but my sleep cycle just keeps changing on me. I go to bed when I'm tired and usually can sleep for eight hours (sometimes with interruptions), even if that means sleeping from 6 am to 2 pm or 8 pm to 4 am. It's not quite as unpredictable as it sounds, as it usually works more like that for some weeks I get tired at 2 am, a few weeks later it shifts to 4 am, then 6 am, then 8 am - that's when I'll try to stay up for more than 24 hours so as to be able to shift it back to early evening, before it all starts over again.

I have it like that too. My body clock shifts all the time. It is a known issue for some people who are said to have a 25 hour sleep wake rhythm. Other people have a 23 hour one and it causes them to be very tired in the evenings.

This thread just reminded me to take my melatonin tablet (just started taking them this week). I'm hoping they will get me back into a "normal" sleep pattern. Lately I've been going to sleep around 5am and waking between 1pm and 3pm. Luckily I don't have a job to get up for these days or I'd be screwed. That said, I've never been a morning person.
