I like cats.

Declawing cats, though, is more like an amputation of the last part of the toe than removing the claws, and can result in all kinds of problems (not least of which is pain) for the cat.

Your best bet would be to not put the cat and possible prey in the same place. (Even declawed cats have teeth.)

oh waitaminute, i thought sean wanted the cat to attack the guine pig. Oooops.

Anyway, cats with claws are more fun. Especially if you dont even trim those motherf***ers. The blood is a sign of his love ^_^.

We have 4 cats.
Toby is my baby. He is a 3yo, dark orange stripes. He needs me and I need him. We understand each other. Very soft, very possessive of me, misses me when I'm gone.
Pepper is my 14yo's cat. She is a 3yo black (with a little white) shorthair. Very sleek, quiet, the Princess of the house.
Carmel is my 11yo's cat. He is a 2yo skinny psycho genius monster who never shuts up. Pale orange stripes, half tabby, half siamese. Hence the psycho genius. Poor kitty.
Sprinkles in my 7yo's cat. She is a 2yo, black and brown tortie. The smallest and snuggliest kitty. But I still like Toby better.

Gertrude Stein is the feline friend of mine...she only lets me pet her. I've always had cats.
Fondly, I remember my past feline friends; Damascus, Beudreaux (Bluepoint Siamese), Eldrige Cleaver, Euripides and Harry Palmer.

Yeah. Exactly. Thank you Vetivert. I was trying to think of something to say about that but i couldn't quite put it to words. My kitty bites me all the time. He is such a good kitty.

I love dogs and cats but I generally prefer cats, the difference between dogs and cats:

dogs will try hard to please the human, humans will try hard to please the cat,
cats are more independant
if a cat damages someone elses property then your not responsible with a dog you are

well if your cat tries to bite you in the vagina, will it be such a good cat then? Brandon tried many times to bite my guys off....ugh. I hate that cat. I tried to train the pet monitor to eat it. I wonder if lizzie ever did the job....

I have the good sense to keep my valuables out of the baby's reach. He knows not what he swipes at, and he shouldn't be faulted for trying.

I love cats, and respect them very much. They are born poets. Dogs are journalists.

I work more with dogs, and know much more about them. BTW, most dogs are not that into pleasing people, they are much more into their own comfort. But being more overtly social, they are more discomforted by social disapproval or ambiguity. :)

re: living with the pigs...

Cats go through critical periods in social development, just like dogs. I'm just not sure what the time table is for them. If they are exposed to certain animals are certain critical weeks in their lives, they will not view those animals as prey, but rather as "family" and will relate to them as either not-cat-not-prey, or as warped kind of other cats (like they do with people).

We've had cats that were brought into the house, usually rather young, before they had hunting skills, that were very happy to play gently with the mice, degus or rats, and would ignore or respect the birds.

Persians, especially show lines, have almost no prey drive anyway, and exotic shorthairs (short-haired persians -- look like Garfield) have variable amounts, but usually not much. My husband bred and showed those breeds, and even when they weren't socialized to prey, they were about as dangerous and active as fur covered bricks.
