I would rather my neighbours just smiled and said "hi" in passing. I don't want them engaging me in conversation. I want to be left alone. My current neighbours don't even say "hi" back to me when I smile and say hello.
That happens a lot to me, not just with neighbours, but to nearly anybody. It does make passing people feel awkward for me, because I feel if I look away I'm being cold or unfriendly, but if I smile and say hi they might not say hi back and then I feel like an idiot, even if I'm not. One person doesn't smile or say hi when I do, and I just think ''OK maybe it's not their day today''. Two people don't smile or say hi when I do and I think ''OK not everybody has to be friendly''. Five or six people in a short amount of time don't smile or say hi when I do then I start thinking ''OK is there something wrong with me?'' Especially when I walk with another person and they're greeting every stranger they pass. It kinda makes it awkward for me all the time. I would do something about it if I knew how.
