I know I have more empathy than most people I know, but where I fall down is in expressing said empathy in a socially appropriate manner. as an example, I was in the ER one day with a complication of a broken arm, and I heard the little kid next door screaming and wailing in pain and abject terror. I wept when I heard this kid, I FELT his pain and terror, but when the nurse came into my stall and asked me why I was crying, I could only say something about "that poor kid!" over and over.

I have scripts, like, "I'm so sorry," "That's so sad." etc.

The symptoms of my ASD require a lack of empathy.

I wouldn't have many of them if I had such.

Yes I have lack of empathy :/. For say someone loses there home, and it's reported on TV or something, Do NT's feel really bad and sad for them? I'm not being an as*hole, I'm serious, because I feel very little empathy whatsoever. Maybe a little bit more if a death has occurred, but still very little.

I'm actually somewhat more empathetic for animals.

Lol my classic thing to say is "that sucks".. I say it way too much and I've offended people by saying that lol.

Hi, Although I definitely struggle in Social situations, I also experience Empathy to a high degree. What people need to understand is that we all are Wired uniquely and an Aspie will be on a Spectrum of how mild or extreme any of their Aspie Traits will "present" or be experienced in that individual. Similarly there are those like myself who have a High Empathy/Emotional Level on that Spectrum of Personality, check out HSP's ("Highly Sensitive People" by Elaine Aron) which includes High Sensitivity to Sound and other Sensory Input. Plus there will also be the NT Personality Types thrown into the mix! such as Standard Introvert/Extrovert and Myers-Briggs and other Categories, as well as the influences of Genetics and Environmental/Social Influences, both positive (nurturing) and Negative...In my case I am often overwhelmed by Sensory-Input in Social Situations, being Hyper-Aware of the sound-levels and confusion of too many simultaneous conversations, plus my own struggles to appear relaxed and NT/Normal. I like a comment that the Tuvak Character made in ST Voyager, that "Composure is not mistaken for EASE", along the same lines, Albert Camus said; "Nobody realises that some people expend tremendous energy merely to be normal"
I would just add, I am no "expert" the above is just the results of experience of my own life and opinions, hopefully based upon honesty and reality!

I used to have a lot more empathy and compasion than most. I didn't ever seem to get much back. These days I don't really trust people and don't really give a s**t about others, which is sad in a way. However I have to look after myself as I learnt the hard way that no one else will.

I know that I have a lot less empathy then the NT's I work with.

I pick up emotions from TV a lot easier. And they affect me a lot more. I just watched Dispicable Me 2, and i cried at the end when Cru got married.

It's not unusual for me to run out the door when I'm watching a movie because I get emotional overload.

Yet with people, I don't feel much at all. Perhaps I don't care about them. I know when I fell in love with a girl, it was so intense my mind so a mass of confusion and conflict. I couldn't think straight for about 3 weeks.
Very difficult to work. But with people I work with, it's like, go bleed somewhere else please.

I have more empathy. am very sensative to other people's and animals suffering and their emotions. I have noticed that while I am empathetic, I have a hard time verbally communicating my sympathy to others and sometimes I shut it off entirely because it is too strong of a feeling.

Empathy is not something everyone either has or don't have. Sometimes it can be their personality as well. Some people are extremely selfish and don't seem to feel or show any empathy at all, others are too empathetic and let people walk all over them. But most people are just in between, and feel or show empathy depending on the context. Everyone can be selfish at times, but some people are more selfish than others. Empathy is not a case of all or nothing.

I think I have too much empathy, and it can cause social anxiety issues in so many complicated ways.
