Do any of you have this? I am wondering, is this common for Aspies? Does social anxiety come from Asperger's Syndrome, or is it a separate thing occuring for other reasons?

I was diagnosed with anxiety, and depression, not too long ago, but it's hard to say if it's connected to my autism. I've also taken several online tests and read a lot of literature on Avoidant Personality Disorder and find I fit that profile to a T. Again, these diagnoses overlap. It's hard to tell when one stops and the other begins. Personally, I'm just one big jumbled ball of mess trying to find his way through life, and I'm not doing such a good job at it.

I was diagnosed with SAD. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I find social situations distressing, but I have difficulty relating to others with SAD worrying about what people think of them.

I used to have severe SAD like that but now my social anxiety is just in the moment. It's like I forget that I get anxious around people and then when it happens I'm like, damn, need to find me some alcohol or busy myself with some piece of technology. Phones, ipods, camera etc.

I think most of us develop social anxiety because of the poor social skills AS gives us. I actually thought I was recovering before I developed this mood disorder that now turns all forms of anxiety way up. I also have PTSD. Sometimes I don't feel safe around people at all.

I think that social anxiety is caused by excessive demands put on us by allistic people predominantly and others may be due to autism spectrum conditions but by and large it has a cause related to excessive demands. Has anyone noticed that people with a sub allistic levels of cognitive functioning those being people with learning disabilities? Thses people do not have social anxiety that is related to inaccessibility but AS people do and other kinds people with other kinds of developmental disabilities which may or may not be on the autism spectrum but have allistic levels of cognitive functioning because allistic people are less patient with them. I see this that way which comes from the social model of disability and I think that this should be applied to all developmental disability whenever possible. Other more irrational anxiety may be caused by deficiencies in anandamide or other neurotransmitters but that is little phobias like brontophobia, claustrophobia agoraphobia. etc. Social phobias in Asperger syndrome are related to the experiences of aspiphobia that for some people they may try to forget it. I do not see only a social model of disability issue but that they may also be PTSD which may come from an abusive family, abuse or bullying at work during adulthhod or bullying at school during childhood and possible attempts at applied behavioural analysis during childhood.

I think it's connected to mild autism, but no severe autism. Now autism is a complex spectrum, so just saying mild or severe doesn't really help, but if someone is socially impaired enough their relationships are significantly impaired, but they are still socially aware enough to know how it impacts them, then they would probably have a ton of social anxiety.

After psychological testing, I was recently given a probably diagnosis of Avoidant Personality Disorder on top of my Asperger's diagnosis. I don't doubt my Asperger's diagnosis -- my lack of social skills from early childhood, introversion, cognitive empathy, related neurological issues, and more spell out Asperger's. My odd and socially disconnected behavior, however, resulted in severe bullying that caused social anxiety as a child. I tried to come out of my shell as an adult and was successful enough to be professionally successful until recently. However, the failure of interpersonal relationships and ill treatment by NTs in the work setting has deepened my fear of relationships and mistrust of people. Though some experts speculate there may be a genetic component to social anxiety disorders as well, the environment plays the strongest role. The ASD you are born with -- the social anxiety is more a response to the discrimination you encounter as a person on the spectrum.

I have never been officially diagnosed with Social Anxiety but I think I have it to some degree. I constantly feel like people are laughing at me and mocking me in social situations and always feel like I'm the worthless one in the room. I have panic attacks at the thought of saying something to someone that may make them angry with me.

I have social anxiety, and I have all the symptoms of it listed down. Social anxiety can be disabling if an NT has it, but I think it can be far worse when an Aspie has it. Usually an Aspie has classic social anxiety if he or she is the type of Aspie who desires social interaction and friendships, is sensitive to what other people think of them, and really wants to be ''normal'' and wants to function the same as his or her peers. The Asperger's traits make the person become distrustful of his or herself because of being afraid of a social faux pas when least expected, and so causes social anxiety even more. This can also cause depression because of isolation, and self-loathing and repetitive questions about oneself, like ''I haven't got any friends because of stupid things I say and do, it's my fault, not their's, damn Asperger's, I hate having it, I hate my life, I hate myself''. This is exactly how I feel.

I seem to have anxiety in really crowded places. I guess it causes me to feel uncomfortable and like people are judging me as if I'm under a scope of sorts. It also gives me a feeling of being suffocated perhaps similar to claustrophobia.

There's no way I could ever easily tolerate a an area crowded with standing room only or an event such as black friday shopping. I can handle other stuff such as going to the mall, library or other public places just fine though.

I became distrustful of others because are times when I don't realize I do something "wrong" and because I do recognize others see me as a target.

I have social anxiety as well but I believe that you can have Asperger's PLUS other conditions as well.
