Boy, have you got that right. It's pretty simple to debate well. The rules of a simple and productive discussion are these. (This is by no means an exhaustive list.) Be careful about what claims you make. Remember that the claims you make are what is at issue, not what I should know you "really meant". Remember the claims your interlocutors make and don't assume anything beyond those claims except that which is necessary for their arguments (i.e., don't straw man). Don't insult people instead of criticizing their view (i.e., no ad hominems).
