If your son is autistic, even said to be in need of support others might not be, I would suggest you avail yourself of any and all services he's legitimately entitled to.
I'd phone Social Security if I were you and explain the situation. Ask them what your next steps are.
I also wonder what Autism organizations there are in your area. If you can't find anything just doing an internet search or checking phone listings, I'd ask the specialist who diagnosed your son, and also try looking to see if any groups with a national presence might be able to give you information on local services.
