I "talk" communicate with animals in their own language. My favourite is with cats.

We, the people on the Autistic Spectrum have a choice.
We can either try to "fit in" with the rest of society, or we can be so egocentric that we can't be bothered.
I choose the actor. I observe NT's. I listen to their socializing. I practice it, so in social situations I can just emulate/mimic what is expected.
It isn't natural for me, but it enables me to "fit in".
It is VERY tiring and draining, but at least we can appear like them even though it is an act. Like being on the stage.
They can't see it is emulation, and so we are accepted.

I tend to anthropomorphosize everything. It's a staple in my brand of humor. I'm a cashier at Walmart and I often talk to the self-check machines. I'll flick them with a fingernail and tell them to play nice. I find it eases the tension by bringing in a bit of levity when people start getting mad because they can't work the machine. If someone asks "What am I doing wrong?", sometimes there's no easy answer because the machine has some random glitches that make it behave bizarrely at times. Rather than say, "In this case, I have no idea." I'll say, "Nothing. It's just being rude. Here, let me set it straight for you." And I'll clear the error. When the normal register gives me its loud, piercing error beep, I'll tell it to quit sassing.

And yes, I talk to animals. Its fun to watch the shocked expression on a neighborhood cat when I greet it with a meow. The shock is usually followed by delight and they often come running over to me. Back in my old neighborhood, when I'd go on walks, I frequently had a few cats following me like I was leading a grand adventure. I have tried barking to dogs, but they seem to take it as a challenge so I don't do it anymore.

I talk to my cats all the time and some times they will try to keep up their end of the conversation! At the zoo, I make soft chuffing sounds to the cougars. The other zoo patrons probably think I'm crazy, but the cougars seem to like it. They will come up to see me. As for inaniminate objects, I'm always catching myself saying "excuse me" to objects I've bumped into

I talk to my cats all the time, they don't answer back but they always seems to be watching me when I talk to them so I'd like to think they're listening. I find it therapeutic. I always greet them with a "hey kitty/baby" when I walk into a room when tey're there anyway.

I also talk to the fish in my fish tank; as I'm feeding them or if I notice them watching me while I'm doing something in the living room (where I keep the tank). I also greet them when I walk into the room with "hey fishes".

I know I'm crazy.

But my boyfriend (can't believe with AS I managed to hold down a relationship) also greets his dogs when he walks into the room and he's NT so I don't think it's just an autism thing.

I also talk to my laptop and computer "come on, work faster you lazy (word unrepeatable)", and I apolgise to tables and doors when I walk into them.

I talk to my cat all the time. My dad thinks it's stupid because he thinks she can't understand me. But she has given me indications that she can. She always responds when I say her name, no matter what tone of voice I use. I have tried to teach her other words, like "food", but she doesn't get it. Can't teach an old cat new tricks, I suppose. (and she is old - about 14 years old I believe).

I also talk to objects. I'll yell "Come on!!" at my computer when it doesn't behave the way I want it to. When I'm gathering materials for sewing, I will talk to the characters I'm trying to make, saying things like, "Okay, <character name>, you need <this color> fabric."

Today when I was posing my Nendoroid figures, I was saying things like, "Okay, <character name>, you need <this part>." (For those who don't know, the parts on Nendoroid figures are interchangeable).

When I talk to these inanimate objects, I realize that they can't talk back and don't have feelings, no matter how much I wish they could and did. It's mostly a way for me to get my thoughts in order and focus. I monologue to myself for the same reason.

I talk to things the same way I talk to people; it really doesn't feel any different. In fact, the only way I really feel confident talking to other people is when I've gotten to know them, and I can run through practice conversations with them in my head... which normally ends poorly in real life, since they magically would rather talk about things I had never anticipated nor want to talk about.

On the other hand, it's amazingly satisfying to yell at the microwave when it burns food, to yell at the weatherman about all of the snow, or to yell at my computer when it's glitching or low on power.

I'm usually more comfortable with animals than people. If I visit some one & they don't have a pet, things just feel odd, like something is missing.

My cat is the only creature I ever have small talk with.

Dosen't everyone talk to animals?
