I used to enjoy trolling a little bit. Then I got tired of it and grew up. Trolling is typically a waste of effort and ultimately pointless; seldom is it ever funny.

you don't even know what trolling is do you? if someone were legitimately trolling they wouldn't be getting banned, they'd be getting other people in your community/site banned.
It's unfortunate then that most people aren't 'legitimate' trolls if that were the case, seeing as most I've encountered weren't anywhere near that successful at riling people up.

Cyber bullies are more personal in their approach. Often they'll tend to gather information and contacts so that they can repeatedly harass people online. Trolls can do the same, but doing so isn't necessary to be a troll. Trolls simply annoy or cause havoc online for their own amusement. I'm sure that they can be intertwined and that they're not always mutually exclusive, but they're not exactly synonymous for the reasons I have given.

A troll is the type of person who will go on an atheist website and pretend to be an especially stupid Christian simply to get people riled up.

A cyberbully is the type of person who will follow someone around harassing them online. Like a real-life bully but through the internet.

Trolls are more of a nuisance; cyberbullies are more malicious.

That's funny - when I was first studying evolution, back when I was still a Christian, I used to be on this website that had a ton of atheists and they were always talking about how they loved science and facts, so I would ask them questions about parts of evolution I didn't understand. Sometimes they would all yell at me that I was a Creationist trolling them. They were mean! I was just trying to learn evolution.

People who go to a site to rile people are doing so for a reason. They may not even be aware of it, but they are working out what's on their mind when they choose their topics and responses. The troll becomes a participant whether they like it or not.

*Shrug* I used to be obsessed with trolling too but then I just kind of stopped. It is something you just end up doing. :u

Trolling is actually from the form of fishing known as trolling, i.e., throwing out a lure and letting it drag behind the boat or reeling it in after casting it.

Hence, you're throwing something out there that you want people to "bite".

It can be due to malevolent or benevolent reasons.
It's gotten more aggressive since it was compared to fishing. Nowadays, it's not like dangling bait; it's more like stabbing someone with a fishhook, laughing at them when they yell at you for it, and then dragging them around by the fishhook to get more amusement out of them.

It's both manipulative behavior and harassment; a troll is attempting to force someone else to have an emotional reaction, and possibly even to force them to react in a certain way.

Sometimes it does little or no harm; sometimes it ruins someone's day; occasionally it ruins someone's life. Most of the time, I'd call it immature behavior without malicious intent; it's a lot like the way a younger sibling might annoy their older sibling and then run away laughing when the older sibling yells at them, feeling powerful because they've caused a reaction. Occasionally, though, there's either intent to harm or a total disregard for the other person's rights. With the anonymity of the Internet, sociopaths seem to feel free to remove their masks.

It's more like going to a fish hatchery, and throwing a stick of dynamite in one of the holding pools, then scooping up the floaters with a net. :D

isn't it illegal to throw dynamite into water to catch fish?

It probably is. I was just using that as a metaphor.

I've tried trolling before and it's never my forte. I get exhausted and it gets tiring. You have to keep an act on. I feel exhausted doing my April Fools jokes online despite enjoying them so I wonder how do trolls even manage to do it for day and weeks and months and never get tired of it.

I once had trolling come to mind on a childfree forum when a bunch of members there were complaining about moms being on WIC and I thought about posting on there as a guest saying the reason why we go on WIC is to piss people off and so we can watch them b***h about it online and we all get together and discuss our plans in private and go and sign up for it just to get a rise out of people and we go to their forums to see if anyone is complaining about us. But sadly I didn't get around to it because I was too lazy to post it and now it's locked to guests posting and only members can post now. All you can do is lurk as a guest. I am not a member there and it's only for childfree people.
But thinking about this trolling idea made me laugh as I thought about it. I think the story is funny.

I googled Chris Chan, after someone here started a thread on him. He must be the most trolled guy on the internet. I thought it was pretty funny at first, but now I just feel sorry for him. I don't think his parents taught him basic social skills. People are still trying to troll him now, even though he hasn't had an online presence for a couple of years.

Not having to deal with trolls is a relief.

Technically, he could be a penultimate troll himself with the amount of bites he gets.

Something to think about.

I feel very certain that I would have no idea how to troll, even if I wanted to.
Not seeing any point in it, probably has a lot to do with that.

But I think maybe I was suckered by a troll earlier in another forum. He was
acting kind of Westboro Baptist Church in his statements, and got me to be
much harsher in what I said to him than I usually am.

If he is a troll, I think he is a great performance artist to rival Kaufman. It can't be great for his self-esteem though.
