I was in a meeting, and an IDIOT called on the rooms speaker phone. I ended up answering figuring it was someone that missed the meeting. She INSISTED on talking with this HORRIBLE voice that hit a frequency that is literally PAINFUL to me. She kept asking STUPID questions(She was apparantly a telemarketer trying to HARASS us into helping her get business.), and I felt like plugging my ears and just screaming *****SHUT UP*****! But nobody else seemed to be in pain, etc... The best I could do without looking TOTALLY crazy was kick away from the phone, and hope she would hang up.

Do you know of any good and inobvious way I could quickly plug my ears or something?

I have not tried to hide any Autistic symptoms, and I would really like to not be so obvious. I don't think I ever had this continue for so long in a meeting. Frankly, when I did things like cup my ears with fire alarms, I never thought I was displaying an autistic symptom. I guess I am just a bit more self conscious now.

Well, I don't know about any inconspicuous ways to plug your ears- if I'm uncomfortable, I just go for it and cover my ears. I do carry around ear plugs too though, which can be put in quickly. You might try that. If people think it's odd, screw them. You shouldn't have to be uncomfortable like that.

Back up a moment...

If it was a telemarketer and you were in a meeting, here's how I would have handled it.

Me: Are you soliciting?
Her: Yes, would you like to buy...
Me: I'm sorry, you've reached a business.
[click].

I wouldn't even get to the point of needing to plug my ears.

She started out a little less obvious, others were involved at that point, and I didn't want to move my arms far. I just didn't think clearly because of it all.

I should have been more specific. I'd have gotten into that exchange when it became obvious she was a telemarketer. They don't always start out that obvious.

If you want a (fairly) inconspicuous way to cover your ears put your hands on the sides of your head, palms inwards. Now place your index finger on the little flap just below the hole in your ear, press in on it. Now put the other three fingers on your temples and make circular motions.

You can just say its stress or a headache or something and most people wont notice your index finger with your other three doing something more obvious.

I usually frown on sexist jokes, but you could have totally gotten away with holding your ears by making a face to show how screeching she is. I have seen lots of men/guys holding the phone away from their ears and mimicking the high pitched ladies on the other end.

I would have hung up.

Telemarketer: Hello are you happy with your long distance?

Me: Long distance is only a figment of Dean's imagination, my friend. *click*
