On the other forums i'm on someone wll ask to kik or skype, but i don't have any of those things.
just wondering how others on the spectrum feel about them.
i like posting, but when it comes to conversations like in pm i feel uncomfortable like i'm cornered.

hmm well i love my skype, not too fond of kik though. i mean, in order to really know a person you'd probably have to have private convos with them and i don't think it's easy to do that while posting in a public forum.

I'm not really so familiar with kik but I really like Skype though I don't really use it. There aren't a lot of people to talk to there.

I like skype as an instant messanger service just as much as any others. I do however like chat / video chat with people i am quite close with who dont mind me sitting on the other end and just working on my own thing. Its often less distracting to have an open channel than it is to have to stop and type replies back all the time, while still letting me feel not so alone.

I guess I'll make a new topic about it, but skype is one of the few ways i actually get to speak to a real person most days. I really need that sometimes.

I have no idea what kik is. I have Skype but I don't use it. I don't really like that sort of thing, I only ever use Facebook messaging or texting if needed, it's not my sort of thing, it feels a wee bit uncomfortable.

Skype is just another camera staring at me. I hate being stared at and having my picture taken. It is not necessary to stare at someone to have a conversation.

I think kik is something related to Google... No idea what though, just saw this on YouTube (very rarely) in the comments and that uses Google+ now, doesn't it? Maybe it's supposed to mean "kick", just like "pushing"/"hitting" the person to notice it so it can add it to the friends list? :?

One can also chat (the old fashioned text way) on Skype, by the way.
Although Skype lost me after one update that came with many changes that I didn't like.

I was using MSN Messenger primarily before, then came the decision by MS to shut it down and move everyone to Skype. :x
Needless to say, I still can't deal with this change, I'm still using MSN, even though it is officially "closed down" for my country. Long live people with the same issue who were willing to patch it.
And I will try to use it as long as possible...

Well, you don't have to install anything and don't have to get in contact with anyone you don't want to stay in contact with. PMs might not be the fastest way of exchange (just like e-mail), so if you want that contact, you should consider to choose something that fits your needs as an instant messaging/chat program.
A rather unknown alternative is Trillian (it can connect to other instant messaging networks as well, e.g. MSN/Skype, ICQ, AIM, etc., while having an own network for itself - requires to have an account for those other networks to synch with it I think). I use it to stay in touch with those who abandoned MSN/Skype after that change.

If you don't feel comfortable about it, you don't have to do anything.

I hope that gave you an insight. :)

Sometime when I use the Kik thingy, I do feel somewhat cornered.
But I do like it over texting on the phone, since I can see if someone saw my message.

Ok so this is from the Kik wiki page..
Kik Messenger is a free instant messaging application for mobile
Devices from Kik Interactive, available on iOS, Android, and Windows
Phone operating systems. Kik Messenger is modeled after BlackBerry Messenger.
It uses a smartphone's data plan or Wi-Fi to transmit and receive messages, photos,
Videos, sketches, mobile webpages, and other content after users register a username.

And I also found this reference..
Is Kik free? Kik is free to download. When you use Kik, data charges might
Apply. Kik uses your existing data plan or Wi-Fi to send and receive messages,
Including content messagesfrom Kik webpages (videos, images, sketches, memes, and more).

Using Kik:
When you're using Wi-Fi, the data is completely free. When you're using
Your existing data plan, the cost is set by your wireless provider. If your Wi-Fi
Isn't working or you're travelling outside of your normal area of service, you may incur charges.

Tips
Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your phone.
Find out how much data is covered by your data plan and how much you typically use every month.

I use Skype everyday, and before that MSN since 2003. I rarely chat on camera or voice, I just use them for instant messaging. I like that I can log out and chat when I feel up to it. I hate text, where people expect you to be around to talk to them 24/7. Anyone who ends up remaining my friend understands that I am not reachable 24/7 and may not reply the same day if I am not feeling like talking.
