What things have you noticed?

Which bother you the most?

For me it's the denial and inferiority complex non disabled people seem to have.

I remember my brother slipped and called Aspergers a mental illness. It took me a lot of patience to not come up and slap his ignorant azz intelligent again.

That we're all a bunch of useless eaters who will never be able to do a lot of things that "normal" people will do and part of it is because we have a learning disability. My dad had the stupidity to tell me that the summer that I was going into Grade 10. I've decided at that moment that I was never going to amount to anything, so I might as well become a hippie. That phase lasted for three years. If I didn't go to college and go into that library at the right time, I'd still be living that life.

That I should be embarrassed. That autism is something to be ashamed of.

I was once talking to my brother about my upcoming surgery to have my foot amputated. He said I should get into shape and enter the special olympics. I said "You mean the paralympics?" "Same difference."

I was annoyed not just because he didn't seem to understand the difference between the two, but that since I would soon have the necessary prerequisite (physical disability) to enter the paralympics, I should automatically want to...... :?

Also, there was one time I was at the grocery store in my wheelchair and when I was heading to the checkout lanes, an old woman, who was standing at the end of the lane, saw me and asked me if I needed help getting my groceries out of the basket and onto the conveyor belt. I said No, I got it. She then insisted that she help me. I said "NO, I don't need help!" She still didn't listen and took my basket and said Oh, you're just like my husband. He doesn't like it when I help him either.

It took a LOT of effort to not yell at her. I didn't say anything because if I did, I would have yelled. I really wish I could have said "You're really pissing me off! Not just because I don't want you to help, but that you REFUSE TO LISTEN TO ME AND RESPECT MY ANSWER!! !! !! !! !"

To which I would reply, "Well, duhh, we're Aspies, not clones."

What is it about disability that makes people think that anyone with a particular diagnosis must be very much like everyone else with that diagnosis?

When people say a particular disability doesn't exist. That is the most ignorant thing a person could say.

When people insist that it's necessary and possible to overcome disabilities with sheer force of will.

My simple mum told me, "You can hide your obsession with Britain if you try." I should have told her, "I don't wish to hide my special interest in Britain, nor do I want to TRY!" That was 14 years ago. I should have moved out before than. I was around the right age to do so.

People saying you should/can use "common sense" to overcome it

People saying aspies are 'globally inferior'

"You can't have autism, you can talk"

That we can't expect the world to accommodate us. Please! If they can put Braille on an ATM and make a car that can be driven by a paraplegic, then why not? All we require is some understanding and less ignorance.

This was how I was raised. I only relaxed that spartan drive to overcome with force of will in the past couple of years and I feel so much better now!
