I was born 3 weeks,,, early,, 5.8z..by caesarean,,,,i got stuck in birth canal..was in there for over a day my dad said,, my son was born within a few days of his due date, 7lbs 8 oz..he has mild aspergers..milder then mine,, but it appears to run on at least my dads side for sure,, and possibility my moms,, I think in my case genetics is more of a factor then birth weight,, although the stress of being stuck might have triggered it,, my son was an induced labor.. face side up..neither of us had normal births,,it is possible there is a genetic factor that is triggered by environmental issues.

I was born 5 days late and weighed 7 pound 3 ounces, with no birth complications, and I was a healthy baby. But I was still unlucky enough to have AS.

From what both my parents have told me i was born eight weeks premature and had a birthweight of 3lbs 1 oz and i had to be placed in an incubator for a month and a half due to complications. I'm suprised that many of you guys (and gals!) here where born in similar ways and it IS an interesting theory that needs more research done. I also have ADD and myopic esotropia (eg, i'm legally blind)

my mother was 41 years old when she had me, she also had cousins with mental retardation, and she had perclampsia. She was only 28 weeks pregnant when I was born. I weighed 4 lbs and 3 ozs. So saying that I believe that could be the cause of my Aspeger's. However, unlike most children on the autism spectrum I had no speech delays, but I sure was a klutz. I feel Having Asperger's can be blessing and a curse. Yes, I was premature, but not by much. A couple of weeks, I think--I was home from the hospital in the same time that any newborn is. I was on the small end of the typical newborn weight range. I was born with congenital hip dysplasia, but that resolved itself with some time in a brace, as it usually does.

You'll probably find a somewhat higher rate of prematurity and low birth weight on the Spectrum, since autism is associated with developmental delay and developmental delay is strongly associated with both prematurity and low birth weight. I expect the correlation to be stronger the more obvious and pronounced the autistic traits are, because people who are profoundly autistic tend to be more likely to have other genetic and congenital problems as well.

Actually high birth weight and late birth has about the same association with Autism as babies who are premature.

Yep I was born late and my birth was pretty traumatic ( had the cord round my neck and they had to force me out). Not sure how much that links...

I was born 1 month premature weighing 4 pounds 13 ounces to a 19 year old who had already had 2 children before me (from a different father). I was kept in an isolette (now called an icubator) for several days before being adopted out.

There must be a link I was born at 29 weeks 2 pounds 14 ounces and display all the symptoms no official diagnosis yet though. You should make this a poll ie premature and asd not premature asd.

I was about a month premature and weighted about 4 lb 8 oz. The birth itself went without any complications, but my mom was very ill the entire time she was pregnant with me.

I was born just shy of the 32-week mark, weighing 3 pounds, 3 ounces. I barely survived my first day of life, thanks to God and my grandmother. I would forget to breathe, and she would thump my feet with her fingers every few seconds to keep me going (imagine doing that all night). I spent the first 6 weeks of my life in an incubator, and Mom took me home about a week before her original due date. I've had mental and emotional problems for a long time (diagnosed with epilepsy in 1994, plus AS six months ago).
