While surfing some Internet absurdities I came across the claim that there is a difference in the ratio of finger length (ring and index fingers) in men and women. Looking further, it turns out to be true.

http://www.viewzone.com/fingersx.html

There appear to be lots of studies confirming it.

Men tend to have longer ring finger than index. Women tend to have those digits the same size.
BUT, autistics and lesbians tend to have the male ratio pattern, while gay men and straight women have the same size digits or sometimes longer index finger than ring finger. There are other traits that appear to be linked to this and in utero testosterone is suspected as the cause. (These are statistical averages and no one is saying it is true for everyone.

Well, I am autistic and lesbian, and I have the male pattern.
What about you?

Depends which way I tilt my fingers, but I have heard this before and found it true for maybe 80% of people.

Its based on male brain type or female brain type rather than actual gender.

Quote:
The researchers found that autistic children tended to have very low 2D:4D ratios (see illustration). Interestingly, children with Asperger's syndrome had ratios that fell between those of autistics and unaffected children. "It fits exceptionally well with the theory," says Manning.

So we can finger test where we are on the spectrum now?

Well my ring finger is actually very narrowly closer in length to my middle finger than my index finger, but I'm male too though.

I remember this coming up in another thread in the past. My index finger and ring finger are about the same length.

This blog post on the results of a study from 2012 is also relevant...
http://keithsneuroblog.blogspot.com/201 ... l?spref=fb

An excerpt:

Quote:
What did they find?
Women with ASD had higher total and bioactive testosterone levels, less feminine facial features and a larger head circumference than female controls.

Men in the ASD group were assessed as having less masculine body characteristics and voice quality, and displayed higher (i.e. less masculine) 2D:4D ratios, but similar testosterone levels to controls. Androgynous facial features correlated strongly and positively with autistic traits measured with the Autism-Spectrum Quotient in the total sample.

I am female and have the male finger pattern. Measuring from the knuckle, my ring finger is longer on both hands. But on my right hand, it looks like my index finger is longer because my fingers are crooked. Also noticed that all my fingers on my right hand are longer than on my left, wonder what that means?

I also am an autistic lesbian with the male finger pattern, on both hands.

I am female with the male finger pattern, too. There isn't a huge difference in size though, maybe that's why I'm bisexual. 8)

I'm a pansexual transman(ftm) and I have the male digit ratio, but I swear it's hard to check when my fingers move on their own!

I'm a bit weird - my right hand describes the female ratio, my left hand describes the male ratio. I'm a bisexual male, have been told by others that while seeming quite masculine, I have certain female traits, such as modes of verbal communication (I'm not sure I agree with their assessment, but I have been complimented on my apparent female modes of communication). I'm also a bit of a sissy, and I enjoy "male" and "female" activities without any anxiety about it. I guess I'm somewhat androgynous.

What type of finger length would a straight female aspie, or gay male aspie have? :P

I'm Aspie, female and straight, and I have the female pattern on both hands.

Possibly Aspie (diagnosed by an autism expert, doc moves abroad, forced to change docs and all say it's schizophrenia NOS or schizo-affective disorde or personality disorders. initial doc was a colleague of uncle Simon btw. you do the math.). (edit: by Uncle Simon I mean Simon Baron Cohen. Just to clear things up.)

I am an NT hetero female with the male pattern. There is 1/4 inch difference on both hands. That goes against the pattern but they said it was a trend, not absolute. My AS daughter is the same (although not 1/4 inch because smaller hands) and she is also left handed which is doubly consistent with the research.

I am a female aspie and straight, and I have 'male pattern' fingers. Hmmmm.. I don't want my fingers to be male. I'll just say that I have lesbian fingers. :-)

The study doesn't fit myself or my child with ASD, but I will tell you what we don't need to have a specific type of hands to prove our ASD.
