i have a fanatical love for books but libraries freak me out because they are both too quiet and not quiet at all. i agree with foxman... i need either absolute silence (which is impossible with people around) or some nice white noise. otherwise i can't think straight because of the constant little sounds interrupting my train of thought. i also don't like the feeling of who-knows-who looking at me... in a library that sense of inspection by others seems really magnified.

One of the best days of my life was spent running around looking for hundreds of different journal articles at the UCLA research library.

However, I have this thing about buying books instead of checking them out. I mean, I'll browse books at the library when I'm bored, but it just doesn't feel right to get a book, have it in my possession in my house, and then give it back. I'd rather spend my hard-earned dough so I can add it to my collection and keep it forever. I hope to be one of those eccentric old professors who's always in danger of perishing in a sudden avalanche of tomes.

I love libraries. I don't have to talk to anyone, and I can be surrounded by books and the internet. This makes me happy :)

Like Sopho-Soph, I often sit between the shelves. In my library, the downstairs is where all the fiction and videos are, as well as the desks, chairs, and computers. That's pretty much where everyone is. Upstairs, which is narrow level that sits half-way up to the ceiling over the downstairs, is non-fiction, which is where I like to hang out. I just like to browse the shelves. I'll get together a pile of books, and go sit between the stacks somewhere on the second level. There's never anyone up there, and the noise from the first floor is muffled as well. Nice and peaceful.

I love my university library. The area around the mathematics rows is normally quiet and there are some comfy seats. I sometimes get a nice feeling of being overwhelmed at how much there is out there that I would enjoy reading and the knowledge that I will always have something to do and read.

Aside from that there is an amazing reading room in the library, it has a high ceiling, a massive plate glass wall, comfy seats with individual desks and waste paper baskets. The main reason I love it however is that its complete silence policy is well strictly upheld and even when there have been over hundred people in there, there has still been a refreshing and enjoyable level of silence making it easy to work and concentrate.

Not everywhere. Some libraries have small budgets, so they have to charge for renting movies.

I hate libraries, always have. In second grade I stayed so near to constant meltdowns that I'd beg my teacher to let me go to the library and walk around just to calm down. The librarian was a horrible old hag who ridiculed me every chance she got. I guess it was because I couldn't control my loud voice at the time, and I was always disrupting her little reading groups. She'd say loudly to the group "Pay no attention to that little dope. She's in here every five minutes!" You could tell she hated kids anyway, and she made it a point to take her rage and hostility out on me. Out of all the bad experiences I've had with teachers, etc. throughout school and college, she's the only one I actually hated.

The libaray here is also filled with noboby but teenagers who use the computers to look at My Space and hog it from kids who need to to school work on them. Every computer has a My Space page on it. They also never read, they just go there to hang out and talk loudly and the libaray peole don't inforce the quiet rule.

My school libary teacher would make me write 100 sentence becase I would forget my libray book. We were supposed to be reading them but I usualy always got drawing books with no text. How was a I supposed to read it? And out of bordem I would spin it and she would get on me for that.

I f*****g despise libraries. It's always too busy, and the computers are always taken so I can't research, and it's always stuffy in there.

I like libraries, because it's the quietest place ever and your children and babies are NOT aloud to scream or cry and if they do they have to leave, plus you can't bring dogs into the library.
