I think it's more like some of us can read some of each other's feelings. But yeah, there are a whole lot of autistic people who can read at least certain kinds of other autistic people very well, but not necessarily NTs, and not necessarily be read by NTs.

I do remember two world wars and numerous conflicts and childish name-calling in the British parliament; the NTs certainly do not understand each other as much as they pretend. There are some things we miss that are socially significant:

Autistic children prefer the company of adults over their peers.

When Aspies(this will also apply to anyone with the Kanner DX who was in mainstream education) take sides with anyone in a dispute THEIR contribution is prized more than others, regardless of their social standing; their technical/factual knowledge is often considered superior by consensus.

So there are big strengths which NTs who know an Autistic personally will concede, yet this is ignored in the information on Autism widely available. Autistic children seek out adults because they are far more sophisticated socially; this isn't the behaviour of someone with no social compass.

You only have to listen to NTs argue to discover how they misunderstand one another.

As for reading others feelings; intuition defies scientific study, it's not logical but intuitive(obviously), so there is no objective measure for it.

With regard to manners, maybe Emily Post's book of manners should be reprinted or something.

I have wondered more recently if this ability to read isn't inevitably based on reflecting ourselves onto others. Which would be why it is maybe easier for like people to read each other...

I'm not sure about directly projecting oneself onto others. But definitely it seems like a lot of the 'reading people' ability that comes easy, has to do with understanding people who are like oneself, in some way.

Stop the press!

Another possible source for the 'Steven Spielberg is an Aspie' is Dan Akroyd who specifically said(and it's confirmed) that he himself has Aspergers on a radio talk show, he reportedly also mentioned off-air that Spielberg has aswell.

Yes, I definately thought there was always something about Dan Akroyd. The way he either under-acts or over-acts. I think back to the Blues Brothers and the conversation Elwood and Jake have in the car and Elwood(Akroyd) is so very Aspie about it. He traded in the original blues mobile for a microphone.

Isn't it ironic though that "Ray" from Ghostbusters ends up being Aspie instead of the guy who played Egon? Hehe.

Whatever happened to that guy who played Egon? I know he has co-written loads of stuff with Ackroyd but only ever starred in Ghostbusters.

He was a bit older and fatter in As Good As It Gets playing a bit part. That's the last time I've seen him.

Egon is played by Harold Ramis and he's moved from acting to directing. He directed the Analyze This/That movies, and Bedazzled. He's probably done more directing since, but I can't know titles off the top of my head.
