I had one of those days yesterday that I felt lucky to survive. It was one of the most difficult sensory overload days I have ever had. It got so bad that I started to lose my vision and I nearly collapsed in the the street just from sensory overload. I even had a meltdown and screamed in public which is something that I rarely ever allow myself to do.

Sometimes I feel that it's really unfair that people don't understand and push us past our breaking points and then act surprised or upset or angry at us for reacting. I am so drained and yet I am expected to continue meeting everyone else's needs and to be sensitive to whatever they are feeling and needing. Sometimes don't know if I can keep going on. I don't have a choice, I have to keep going on and I will, but sometimes it's just hard.

But life is not fair for anyone but when we have sensory issues sometimes it's just harder than it should be.

That sounds like a really horrendous day you had; I hope you can get the chance to recover from it properly and get what you need to do that. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I also strongly relate - I had a day at work that almost got me to that point just this past week. I didn't start screaming but I nearly could have gotten to that point. I was screaming inside! I too was expected to meet other people's needs, yet my own needs were completely trampled that day.

By the time I got out of there I was so frazzled by all the stuff that had happened that I was in a state of shock, and I wasn't able to continue with my day. I had needed to go back out to the store for groceries, after finishing work, and do other things, but instead I just couldn't. I had to stay home and literally recover by staying very quiet, not even the TV on.

People don't realize, and could never understand, that when our sensory overload happens it has consequences that last for the rest of our day or longer. When I've really been put through the ringer, all my other plans have to be shelved because I'm stunned into a depression and an inability to keep functioning, until I get to calm down and recover.

No s**t! I lost my job. Wasn't quite that bad but I couldn't think straight, sleep, and was obsessively thinking about things that were all jumbled up in my head. People would tell me to do stuff, and expect me to multitask during a meltdown. For weeks on end. It was horrible. They had to write it down, or I wouldn't remember. My career is in a constant hustle. When my mind is clear, I can do it as smooth as spreading butter on bread. I am the king. It is amazing. Until I meltdown. Than I am worthless, and people treat me like crap. They don't understand.

I had a dream the night before last about this website, and someone writing stuff. That someone was a rabbit. It looked like you. Weird. No. More like freaky. Maybe even creepy

Anyways, you're not alone. People may not allow you, but you know what you have to do. Take a break, tone it down, and straighten your head out. I hope you can be you again. I am still having issues with that, and it has been over a year.

Hi Skibum,

Sorry you had a bummer of a day

Yep...people don't understand sensory overload.

I hope you are able to use this day to recover.

It's true: you must live, despite it all.

I also have these problems. It sucks, it really just sucks.

I always get migraine attacks from a sensory overload.

Sorry to hear that you guys/girls also have to experience this. It's pretty tough to try to do a lot of stuff in a day and having these problems. I follow a schedule most of the time to try to not let it happen. It works but with a job and all it looks not possible.

Hope you can recover from this. Just go to bed and sleep. Even if you don't fall asleep, just lay there and rest.

Thank you all so much for your responses. It is so encouraging to have people who actually understand what this is and how severely it can affect us. I am so exhausted and drained so I am trying to rest today. But I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank all of you.

Yournamehere, I am so sorry you have lost your job. I know how that feels. I have lost so many jobs in the past because of Spectrum related stuff. I hope that you will be able to find a new one that can meet your needs and be a great fit for you.

Thanks again for all the support and love here on WP.

That does sound like a truly awful day, Skibum....I hope you are feeling better now. *HUGS* It is such a shame that there are so many people who really don't understand what we go through. If only there was a way for them to experience it themselves and then maybe have more empathy for us.

Wow, what a terrible, awful, no good, very bad day. This is why I try not to judge people out in public, because I never know what they could be going through. Yes, life can be a real pain in the ass, especially for us, but I hope you know that there are people who care and understand.

Sorry to hear about your bad day skibum. ((hug)) to you and anyone else who's struggling with life. I can totally relate to this thread. I'm staying home for a while now due to recent effects of people upsetting me. Because of this I'm struggling to function and forgetting things. I even smashed my car into a kerb then later left my purse overnight on the passenger seat with the window down. I think everyone will be safer if I don't drive until I'm feeling better :)

Life would be so much easier if only people would be more understanding.

The world of humans can be very cruel. Sometimes enough is enough and it is time to escape the human context.

I regularly need to immerse myself in the natural world to recover. My favourite place is out on the ocean, in a kayak or on a windsurfer.

Do you enjoy reading books? If you like being around animals you'll probably enjoy this one http://chasingdoctordolittle.com. Here's a short video clip on related research on prairie dogs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1kXCh496U0.
