it helps a lot if the dream involves emotional elements from your waking life, the emotions give it the extra energy.

I lucid dream fairly frequently. Maybe once a week. I can make myself lucid dream if I want. I don't get a good night sleep when I do though. I'd rather have the rest.

All I can say is you're closer than I am if you've gotten to the point of waking up. Good job. You can actually get somewhere with it. I don't know whether or not I can. If I ever got to that point it would be the little amount of success I'd need to encourage and motivate me. Don't you give up now.

I started practicing this early this year with the intention of using it to improve my life by changing behaviours and adopting new ones (basically to see if I can re-wire the brain at a subconscious level). The key to not waking up is to remain calm and not get too excited, and then focus on your senses. You can focus on the detail of something, notice how it feels or create a sensation by rubbing your hands together. This causes the brain to focus on stabilising the dream environment.

Almost all of my dreams were lucid as a child, though I couldn't always control them, especially if they were lucid nightmares. I had recurring nightmares and I always realized I was dreaming in them, but they were still scary and I couldn't change the outcome most of the time. Now I don't usually even remember my dreams.
