My son is 10 years old, and still can't ride a bike. He is absolutely terrified of it. I also know a couple of older Aspies who do not drive a car. Is it common for Aspies to avoid driving or riding bikes? If so, how do you get around?

I learnt to ride a bike at age 6 but only last week recieved my learner driver permit (I am 27) I ride my scooter and catch public transport (trains mostly). As I live ia capital city it is ok for me to do this. BTW the driving age is 18 here (16 for a learners permit).

I learned to ride at 6 also. I got my drivers license around 20. You don't just LEARN to ride a bike in general. Get him some training wheels, have him ride that way for a while. Have him get used to breaking, balancing, etc... Take the training wheels off, bring him to a flat area that is relatively safe, and guide him and try to remove support. Try to have him go a few dozen feet, and reveal he is riding. THEN, he just has to kick off. Riding a car SHOULD be simpler, but wait a while for that.

I ride a bike and drive a car. I know that I had training wheels my bike until I was 9, I think. I did take awhile but now I love to ride my bike all over the place. I would say not to give up on your son!! !

I promise to never give up on him! :D

We've done the training wheel thing, and he doesn't even like that. It freaks him out. Since I know other Aspies who don't drive, I wondered if it was common for Aspies to dislike travelling in/on a vehicle they must control, and if so, how do they get around?

I grew up in the country so I learned to drive many things when young. It took me a long time to drive straight, but only the rows in the field got upset and no one was hurt. My dad bought us a golf cart and the same thing, near mishaps that my brothers prevented, but eventually I got the hang of it.

I had to teach my best friend to drive when she was quite a bit older because she was so afraid. I took her out in the middle of the country (far away from our college) and on a very wide dirt road, I stuck her in front of the wheel and just waited until she finally tried. She still doesn't like to do it, but she can.

I don't remember having major problems riding a bike. Many of us have horrible eye-hand coordination and depth perception problems. Many of us have balance and clumsiness issues. On the whole what I have read on here is that it just takes longer and patience. Let him sit on the bike. Maybe change it into a stationary bike. Or stand next to him and let him try to turn the pedals around just once. Or rent a tandem bike and let him learn as he rides with you. Put him in front.

I never had a problem with learning how to ride a bike. I learned how at about 3 years old. I got my driver's license on my 16th birthday. But I am afraid of being in vehicles NOT under my control, and I can't drive cars with an AUTOMATIC transmission!

I can ride a bike, though it takes me a while when I haven't done it in a while and I can be awkward, hence I don't trust myself to use one here. I walk, take trains or take buses to get around.

For what it's worth, I didn't learn to ride a bike until I was well into my teens--it required a degree of balance and coordination I didn't develop until then.

I loathe driving for a complex series of reasons I won't bore anyone with, but I do it out of necessity. On the other hand, I'd rather drive myself than be at the mercy of another driver except for long distances.

Personally, I'm looking forward to teleportation devices.

I learned to ride a bike around 6 or 7...but I do not drive (am 31)...I am also afraid to ride on scooters and such where i am not using my legs to propel myself...I feel out of control....
I also have general anxiety about just riding in a car, but I love my bike..I have even been a bicycle courier in the past...it is a great job...

I was fine at an early age with all my motor skills: though I did fall off my bike a lot, though this was mainly due to my lack of…not fear, ah…ability to recognize dangerous situations.

Driving cars: I've got no problem with it; I just have trouble with the written test.

I didn't learn to ride a bike or swim until I was 11.

I can't ride a bike... can't roller skate... I can't do anything on wheels because my coordination and judgement isn't fast enough to stop me from going-it always ended in disaster when I tried, so I just walked, or got rides for a long time. Didn't learn to drive until I was 18, when I was forced to, and it took me 2 years to feel comfortable driving in a car by myself (I still prefer other people to drive if I can get them to).

I know NTs who can ride bikes and there well into their 20s. I can ride a bike ok. I passed my driving test. But I don't really like driving. I think I'm a danger. Plus I can't really travel far anyway because I get lost. Don't really know what to suggest. :?

I been riding a bike since I was 6. I've had my driver's license since I was nearly 17. I don't drive much anymore because I take buses now to get around. I only drive if I want to get somewhere quicker or if I leave town.
