Yes, much to the chagrin of my family.
I wish I could summarize exactly what AS is in layman's terms so I could put it on paper and tell people more about it...It's almost as if it's become the biggest importance in my life to explain how I think and feel about things to other people, but I haven't found a way to convey that information to those I know and they probably don't care to hear it anyways...

Newaspie, do you know generally what that article said? I was under the impression the Mercury thing had been ruled out, but then, getting mercury in vaccines doesn't sound like a real great idea! I know Bobby Kennedy thinks there's a real connection there (and I guess also a correlation with how close people are to coal plants, which produce mercury too).

i think it has been ruled out... but general access to journal articles predominantly gives access to older articles. you either have to have subcriptions or gain access to current journals through universities...

edit: wow grammar!

Somewhat. I was obsessed with it and found out as much as I could about it before I was diagnosed.

Basicly the article was a very in depth look at all variables & symptoms of mercury poisoning in comparison with autism/aspergers. It also looked at the rising autism rates in conjunction with use in the vaccines and the rise of mercury within the environment of industrial societies.

Aside from the mercury link, it was also very interesting to go through just for the in depth look at all signs and symptoms prevelant among ASD patients that are not on most standard diagnosis sheets or aren't usually thought to relate to ASD. So even if you don't agree with the mercury link or want to read the lengthy article, t's worth a look just to peek at their extensive symptom list.

They quit making vaccines with thimiserol in 2003 but are still using their already made supply rather than discarding it (for economic reasons) in some places in the US, though shipping most of it out to other countries for use there instead. And they still use it in some prescription injections such as cortisol.

The article mentioned some countries that had almost no incidence of ASD until around the time of introduction to vaccines with thimiserol, such as China that had almost no ASD prior to, and it has now been skyrocketing.

I did find out that the amount of mercury in a vaccine containing thimiserol exceeds the FDA/government regulations of safe use, though in reality, mercury is known to be extremely toxic/poisonous in even tiny amounts, though some seem much more sensitive to it's toxic effects than others. One thing stated in the article was that it seems that those who are more susceptible to immune disorders have a harder time processing mercury and have worse effects.

It's hard to say about the correlation: I read in some places it has been ruled, in some that it is possible in some cases of ASD but not all, some said the connection is being suppressed due to the contraversy of vaccines and push from the pharmacuetical companies, etc, depends on where you look for the info... And many sources from both sides are very reputable people with credentials.

Whether its related or not, who knows at this point as there seems to be so much conflicting data around.. Personally, even after extensive research, I'm having a hard time accepting or ruling it out either way but was definately worth a look and consideration.

I was only diagnosed a month ago, so I suppose I'm obsessed in that I'm still trying to sort out how all my various oddities fit with the diagnosis, and how to use my new knowlegde to work around my weaknesses and take the best advantage of my strengths.

But I'm not obsessed in the sense of being strongly interested. Of course I'm interested to a degree because it's a thing that's happened to me and that explains a lot about me, but sometimes I just get sick of thinking about it and have to take a break and just be me for a day or two, before getting back into re-organising-the-way-i-approach-life mode again.

I don't consider myself obsessed, but I do read a lot of autism/AS related books. I am fascinated by medical topics in general.

Yeah, I went through a phase of being like this - and even now, I am still about 70% obsessed with it. This enabled me to learn a HUGE amount though - so I think my obsession was, in this case, a very positive thing.

i think this thread may kinda tie in to the egoccentric & AS thread.

i try not to project my egoccentric tendancies... but i do tend to focus on me a lot lol

yep, I'm obsessed. My bf claims that he doesn't mind talking to me, but I never shut up about it. Whatever I'm thinking about at the moment winds up being what I talk about-if attention gets switched even temporarily, I'm right back to it later on. (him: I like steak. me: yeah-about that thing we were talking about earlier, I forgot to tell my psych about....)

Yes, I am obsessed with AS, I think about it all the time, selfdiagnosed, sometimes I am convinced that I have it and sometimes I have doubts, and I go like that for so long

i went through a period of obsession with AS when i first discovered it and the many likenesses i shared with it
. but it wasnt a full blown obsession at anytime. was like a passing phase which i never abnormal because i would think that anybody who discovers they have characteristicss of any medical illness would experience an increased desire to find out more about it and discuss it with others
