This might have been done before, but I just saw this video and I thought it was so funny. So, what do NTs often say to you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fTBM_3sdwE

I often get:
You must be high-functioning!
I have an autistic [insert relation here] and they're nothing like you...
Are you super good at math? Quick what's 3532x6425?
You seemed so normal/you're not weird enough!

I sometimes get basically little or no reaction (and then me trying to comprehend what the person is actually thinking), or something like 'oh person x I know is autistic too'. My dad tried to deny it at first when I came out, and then later came to agree with it, and then now seems to act like its not even there.

My official evaluation by a psychologist was 15 hours of various tests/assessments. AS(D) is not something you can look at someone and instantaneously conclude they have it or not. There are commonalities of course that we share, but it is simply isn't that simple.

"you should hang out with people more"
"you shouldn't be dependent on just one person"

Like, sorry, but that is simply how I am. Ideally I would like to be different, but at least a large degree falls beyond my ability to change.

"Labels are for soup cans, not people" lol.

I've had:

Everyone's a bit autistic.
Really? People say I'm autistic too!
Artistic?
You need to accept Jesus into your life.
Einstein was autistic and he was a genius.
Does autism make you deaf?
Can you speak?

Thanks for the video. It cheered me up a bit.

The last one I got was "Asperger's? Didn't the sandy hook shooter have that?" Then, naturally, we didn't speak again. Since then, I generally don't tell people unless I absolutely have to.

I do often get "Nobody would even notice you're different" from close friends, but I find that nonsensical.

"Hello"

"Good morning"

"How are you?"

"Could you see what the dog wants?"

"What do you have for lunch today?"

"Rach, you have troubles with communication? I never would have guessed." (Heavy sarcasm there from one of my friends.)

It's just a matter of (place any activity difficult for autistics to do here)

I never tell people I'm autistic, so I don't know what they would say. Probably nothing helpful though. :?

"Why do you always have to be right?"

This, after having warned co-workers of a flaw in their design that manifests only under what they consider "rare and extreme conditions".

Naturally, those conditions turn out to be both common and normal once the customer starts using the (custom-made) product.

I've had people tell me I can't be autistic because I'm high-functioning (relatively).

I also really enjoy when people suggest that I socialise more. That always makes me feel really good about myself and less self-conscious when interacting with my fellows.

From my former General Practioner: "You can't have Asperger's Syndrome because you don't wet the bed, play with fire, or torture small animals."

I have a new GP now.

"You're really high functioning." Honestly this doesn't bother me because I can live alone, take care of myself, go out alone, have a job, I don't need a caregiver.

Former therapist: I don't think you should have kids

Me: Why?

Former therapist: For one, you have Asperger's.

And I don't need to tell people I have Asperger's or autism to get other comments when I talk about my childhood or being different:

"You seem normal" (also doesn't bother me)

"You're fine" (former friend and then getting mad at me for not talking enough or not knowing what to say to what he said and "oh" wasn't good enough and he told me I was fine but then contradicts himself)

About my anxiety:

"Everyone gets stressed out"
"It's hard for everyone"
"It's stressful for everyone"

I must be crazy then and weak and need to toughen up

About my learning issues:

"College is hard for everyone"
"I had a hard time in math. I hated that subject."
"Everyone needs help in their school work, I got help sometimes."
"Everyone has a hard time knowing what to write during their assignments."
"School is hard for everyone."

I must have been a special snowflake and lazy

From my ex boyfriend: Every second grader gets distracted by everything, I haven't seen any second grader who could focus on their work and get their work done

Wow I must have been in some special school where kids in my second grade class always got their work done and had free time and had very little homework while I had tons of homework, about every class assignment so I hated school and was always stressed out because of school and homework and could never relax and have time alone to myself after school because of homework and then it would be time for bed by the time it got all done. Wow this is all normal and those other kids were not? They must have all been gifted and above their age level.

I also get sometimes "Look at me" from random people.

I had one person tell me at a party once why am I not socializing with people and I need to talk and join. God if this is what aspies get often from people in every social situation, no wonder they hate going out and being with others and would prefer to stay home. Good thing everyone leaves me alone so social situations are not a problem for me.

Another popular one, with people who don't know I'm autistic: "You're really childish," but it's true, so hey!

I RARELY tell people; but, when I DO, I get things, like:

- "You don't seem like a person, with Autism".

- "Ohhhh, so THAT'S why you're so much smarter, than everybody else".

- "Oh, so..... that means you're really good at math, huh?"
