A single, all-encompassing "cause" of autism will never be found.

Now I'm just wondering what we do with all of that paper.

Most of my autistic traits can each be matched with one of my parents' autistic traits.
They each have a different set of autistic traits from each other, nearly non-overlapping, and I seem to have inherited most of each parent's set.

As far as I'm concerned, the autism "incidence" increased, primarily, because of the broadened definition of autism, and a greater awareness of autism in people who are relatively mildly affected.

Yep, Walrus, that was a great illustration of correlations.

...kind of like the increased incidence of severe weather events.
What used to be just called winter weather is now given names like "Polar Vortex", and stuff like that.

I would tend to agree with that premise.

Did you not see the article posted in the forums today about the genetic testing that speculate that there may be 100's if not thousands of different types of Autism? Maybe the gut dysbiosis theory is only applicable to certain kinds of Autism

I think you would find that you are talking about the same article here - read the link? That's what the link is saying here!

Brain-body issues for some women on the spectrum:

PS: if you want to comment or disagree on this, could you please actually read the article first, instead of blindly posting with a rush of blood to the head. Thanks.

I didn't read the entire article, just the summary & then skimmed through and had a look at the infographics.

I believe Autism is a combination of brain/neurological wiring/connection differences + gut dysbiosis. It's been my experience that treating the digestive has improved the neurological significantly. Probiotics seem to act as neurotransmitters in the gut, making connections to the brain via the enteric nervous system, resulting in significantly reduced ASD symptoms.

I've been sharing that here for the last year or so, but few people seem to believe it.. yet. With studies being done & more people learning and accepting these "new" ideas, I believe probiotics will become a major go-to treatment for Autism.

I believe it is far far more complex than your twofold theory, GF. My guess is that the DNA profiles of ASD are affecting every system, every cell and every part of the body, not just the gut and brain, in ways that alter function in both very subtle ways and overt ways. This idea is expanding in the serious research and I welcome it with great interest.

The opening post link is in line with this perspective, though it seems to be a concept that most WP people either aren't interested in or dismiss out of hand without bothering to read the link.

In time there may be more interest as more of the "whole body impacts" research filters through to the media headlines - once the media reports something, ironically, some people take that as a sign that it's probably true!

Fair enough, could very well be more complex than my simplistic view.

I'll read the full article sometime, but I have an extremely busy couple days upon me right now.

I'm really getting to believe in the "many autisms" explanation.

In my reading of old case studies, I found at least some gut involvement.

But this doesn't take into account ALL autism cases. It might work for some--it might not work, or even be harmful--for others.

It's always good to be well-nourished, though--whether you're autistic or not.
