Hey Gang,

I was wondering what causes somebody on the spectrum to meltdown? I recall as a kid and (young) teen to have violent meltdowns followed with a massive headache.

I have seen countless videos of children and adults whom are on the spectrum meltdown but can't figure out if it's environmental or perhaps something more organic

Any theories?

Hey there.
this is my opinion...I think that it's a little of both. When I have a meltdown I feel like I am letting out every frustration and every hurt feeling since my last meltdown(sometimes it's months in between, sometimes it's weeks) but it doesn't just come out of nowhere. There is always a trigger.. for example if my partner and I have a small disagreement and she begins to raise her voice or talk over me it will usually trigger a meltdown. I think that my freak out is caused mostly by the loud noise than actual anger.
As for whether it's organic or environmental... to be honest I feel it's more environmental. When I am in my own bubble, focused on my own interests, listening to one song on repeat there is never a meltdown in sight. It's when I face the world, stressing about every tiny interaction, frustrated about feeling misunderstood that I start to go to that place.
