Whenever I hear someone else's music in the background while I am trying to do work, I just simply can't consentrate. I get really frustrated, annoyed, and stressed out just over music playing in the background. It's different when I listen to my own music though. Anyone else feel the same way?

It depends.
Are there two of you trying to listen to different music at the same time?
Is it an instrumental, or does the song have lyrics?
What language am I working in? Is it the same language as the song lyrics?
How loud is the volume?
What kind of work am I doing? Repetitive work, or work where I need to process and/or compose and/or create?
Am I working for a boss in an office,
or working on my art at home,
or writing for fun at home?
Am I driving with the radio on?

Generally at home, I keep things silent.

Yes, completely. If I can control the volume level and what kind of music it is, its soothing and helps me focus.

If it's somebody else's racket booming in from who knows where, it's irritating to the point of distraction and totally fries my nerves. I feel like hunting it down and smashing the source of the assault to pieces.

I can't work well with music playing. I know it helps some people, but I am not one of those people.

Or, if it's not distracting me, it's being completely shut out, which makes having it on pointless, since it's essentially just meaningless noise then.

It depends on what music it is...If its music I like it doesn't bother me, but if i don't like the music then it would. I also find listening to music helps me concentrate on some things, and makes more mundane things more entertaining.

Come to think of it, it's good if I'm doing easy repetitive rote work. If I actually have to think, though, that's when it's a problem. It's actually even worse if it's music I like because then I'm then more likely to focus on it instead.

yes, drives me crazy when my neighbors or a parked car play their music. I cant concentrate on anything, and it angers and frustrates me a lot. I need total quiet.

Yes, definitely. The OP could've been written by me. That's exactly how I feel. I have gotten into arguments with people about that. Even if I argue with and get hated by everyone at work, I will stop the music (radio) or just refuse to work where music is on. Even if it's not very loud, it still annoys and distracts me very badly. I have come to hate music in general because of the way people force that noise on me.

I do listen to some music but I don't want to be doing something else while listening to music.

Music playing at any volume is too distracting for me when reading, writing and doing most homework.

I can listen to music while on forums or emailing someone.

But when I am reading journals for uni studies / revising / doing coursework / doing an online uni quiz, I need total silence.

In the cold months I can keep all the windows shut and sit in pleasant silence.

When it is summer I get a bit mad as I have to have the windows open. My street is very quiet during school term time / at night / early in the morning. But during the day when kids are around, I end up having to wear earplugs at home.

When I lived in supported housing the noise outside was so bad (there was a dual carriageway right near the house and a major accident and emergency department 2 minutes away so loads of sirens) that I walked around the house in ear defenders (the other residents thought I was weird but I didn't care). In the summer some EXTREMELY loud kids would play football in the green right in front of the house. I got so mad that I started having thoughts about a movement-activated gun outside the house, loaded with hundreds of rounds....I only get that morbid when I'm stressed out.

The only time I ever listen to music is when im driving. I need total silence when doing any work or Friends on in the background on the telly.

If it's my music and at a comfortable volume it can actually help me to focus but it depends on the activity. If it is to solve a math problem, for example, I can listen music without any problem, but if I'm studying something that requires more reading then there's no way to do it properly without absolute or almost absolute silence.

Luckily for me I am an electrician, which sometimes works in my favour, if I am in someone's house and they are playing music or the television is loud, I bend the truth and say I need to turn all the power off, which is officially what I should do anyway, but I know I could for instance work on the lighting circuit and leave the socket circuit on.

I am slowly learning to lie, as some times people moan at me for having to turn the electrics off. Weird I know, I'm there to fix their problem.

Once I was in a house where there was a fella who had physical and learning disabilities, he was standing right next to me saying quite loudly "baked potatoe baked potatoe baked potatoe" luckily before I could crack, I got called away to an emergency job and someone else went and done the periodic inspection report.

Here's a short reply, no I can't work when there is music on, right now I can hear the heating system in my house, car doors slamming, cars driving up and down, their tyres rubbing against the kerb, birds chirping. Why can't the world be quiet. I do enjoy listening to a single bird sometimes, like a robin (UK)

Also when I'm driving, sometimes I play music deafening loud when going along, usually drum and bass or black metal
