Today was the annual company picnic. I had been dreading this day for months now. When I first got there I did the few greetings of people I had to say hello to (my boss and the other people in my workgroup) and set out to find a place to settle in where I could be left alone. I brought my own camp chair and I set it down kind of away from most of the crowd and kept to myself. For the most part it worked except when a couple of times a couple of guys I work with wanted to come by and engage me in conversation. As you can imagine, small talk is something that I am not good at. Eventually they found other people that were more interesting than me to talk to.
I got through the entire four hours (it seemed like four days) without incident.
How big is the company? When I worked for Microsoft, the company picnic was like 15,000 people, so nobody really knew or cared if you went - you'd be lucky to see anyone you knew.
