Did anyone's parents discourage your pedantic, formal language as a child? My parents seemed to think I was seeking to attract attention to myself.

I do not think that I overuse phrases. I try to choose the best terminology given the circumstances of the conversation and rarely, if ever resort to off the shelf statements. Having a PhD in science and English as a second language makes this socially acceptable for me.

People frequently ask me if I've "swallowed a dictionary" to comment on the fact that I apparently use advanced vocabulary or pedantic diction. I have a verbal IQ of 134, so words are one of my specialities. In my diagnostic report, it notes that I "frequently use odd words or phrases, such as "inexplicable" or "with which I'm unfamiliar". . .

This. Exactly this.

Am I supposed to be ashamed of my vocabulary? Because NT's don't seem to like sesquipedalians.
Probably it makes them realise they might not be the smartest persons in the room, and they can't stand that a socially disabled person could be technically smarter. :?

This also. I think I'm saying precisely what I mean and am often dumbfounded when people misunderstand or misinterpret. Usually the misinterpreting is due to unintended subtext inferred by the listener. And then when I try to explain the difference between what I really meant and what s/he thought I meant, it only escalates the misunderstanding and :x feelings. So emotional, these listeners.

Its because there brains are still in developmental stage, their primitive instinct of competition makes them want to feel superior to others to try impressing potential partners.

Yeah, because a false sense of superiority is soooooo impressive and attractive [/sarcasm]

With discretion, I once said "comply" to my boyfriend during a romantic encounter & with seriousness. But he somehow found that hilarious (& he's never forgotten).

That is pretty funny :) "You must comply. Resistance is futile!"

It would be interesting to perform a word frequency analysis on a large sample of texts written by different aspies, and to compare the results against other texts. I might actually give it a go when I have some spare time.

How very aspie of you :) I look forward to reading the results!

I defiantly am not formal with writing or talking but I've noticed that some other Aspies are.

Won't get around to it in the next few months, but when I do, I'll post the results on WP. If the results are intriguing, the next step would be to create a Web service that updates the word frequency found in WP posts on a monthly basis :-)

I don't have asperger's but I am autistic and frequently say, "Pardon my ignorance..."

But this could simply be an indication of how timidly polite I am.

I don't think there are phrases we use more often as a collective (except ones that are directly related to autism), but sure, we all have favourite words and phrases that we draw upon more often than many people would.

However, I wonder whether this is only distinct in childhood. Amongst adults, I feel favourite buzzwords are common.

If one compare the content of this website with other websites (with the exception of technical ones), you'll find that we WPers tend to be more conscious of our word usage and of our grammar on average.

I do not believe this would be difficult to prove at all.

I agree: I see considerably less "text speech" on this site compared to many other forums, and the majority of posters here have an above-average grasp of, and appreciation for, correct grammar, punctuation, etc. I have also noticed a general trend towards more advanced vocabulary, and have had to look up words used by other posters several times, which is a refreshing novelty on the Internet.

My writing creative writing is a string of cliches. My formal writing is full of phrases such as "It will be noted", "This occurred despite the fact that" and "ninety-nine rabid hamsters attached themselves to his scrotum".
