I have this thing where I'll have a craving for a certain food and then that's all I want to eat for weeks. Last time it was poached eggs. I ate them for breakfast and dinner for about a month (I don't really eat lunch). Now I'm craving lemon sago pudding. All I can think about eating is lemon sago. If I don't eat it, I don't feel right. It seems to be the texture of the food that hooks me in - the runny poached eggs with their velvety feel and the rubbery pearls of sago.
Do you think this is some kind of food OCD? Or is this common with autistic people?

I'm glad I saw this post! My 16 yo does this sometimes. He is CURRENTLY only eating cucumber since the past 9 days. :? He won't even eat green peppers, spinach, watermelon, or lettuce which are normally the other 4 foods he likes. Most people say, "Oh my, that's not healthy!" But don't have any ideas. (Of course it isn't healthy but at least he is eating something). I know a lot of autistic kids who sort of do this, but I've never met anyone who is as extreme as my son (you're probably not either, no worries). I don't think he has OCD but anything is possible I guess. My son's doctor thinks it's due to autism.

^ I once went through a cucumber stage too! And celery. If I try to eat other foods with the 'stuck' food, it feels like it's been corrupted and I don't get the same feeling. At least your son seems to be stuck on a relatively healthy food. :|

I absolutely do this. I think it has to do with the texture as well. My cravings for them usually last from several weeks to several months. Not sure if it's OCD, but I do have it as well.

I usually have some food that I eat daily for several weeks, then get tired of it and move on to something else. Currently it's crusty baguettes for breakfast and an apple after dinner. If I can't have an apple after dinner each night I get uneasy. I also keep celery in the house for that reason.

For me, it seems often to be some sort of crunchy food. Years ago I read that folks with anxiety tend to like crunchier foods. I have no idea about how true that it, but I admit I do like chomping down on foods with a definite texture.

That seems reasonable to me. I have it to a lesser extent.
Boiled okra has a unique and slimy texture. I really like it.
Have you tried it?

i think its common with those on the spectrum. i eat a hot pocket with carrots every day for lunch, and have for the past several years. dinner varies and for breakfast...always cereal. i take a vitamin daily and try to eat healthy in general, but yeah i definitely get stuck on certain foods. recently they stopped carrying my favorite cereal and favorite hot pocket and i had a meltdown because of it.

I don't think I've ever eaten okra. Once I finish my lemon sago obsession I may try it.

I saw a show about a woman who only eats fries and has done so from age 5 or so.

It's good to hear someone explain why. Thanks!

It's true that at least they are vegetables/fruit…but him being underweight is a problem. If you're only going to eat one food, it's better if it has calories (all of his fav foods are very low calorie). I actually used to worry he'd have stunted growth…but now he is 6ft-5 and still growing, so I guess if he his growth was stunted, that was probably for the best  .

I ate sauteed mushrooms for dinner nearly every single night for over a month when I was 11. Did something similar with artificial crab when I was ten. Etc, etc. I think it's pretty common for those on the spectrum.
