New York (Near Ithaca) Assisted Living?
Hi everyone,
In November I am moving to Ithaca, NY with my wife and new step son Patrick. Patrick is 22 and has autism. He is considered high functioning but will never be able to live alone or work unsupervised. He desperately wants to have independence though and we are trying to find options available for him.
The initial thought would be some type of group home with rotating mentors. However, we are open to alternative forms of living as well. Although he will never have complete independence it would be great to great the illusion of independence so he can at least feel like an adult and more like his peers.
Any suggestions of places like that in Ithaca? (We are open to anything within a few hours)
Any suggestions of resources in Ithaca where we can research this topic further?
Thank you everyone
Scott
My family lives in Ithaca and my adult daughter (25) has Aspergers.
We got her enrolled at the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities opwdd.ny.gov. OPWDD doesn't provide services directly, they have you get your services from an agency. We use the Franziska Racker Centers. They have a website at rackercenters.org and will be able to tell you how to get started with OPWDD. I'm pretty sure Racker has residential services that would suit your son's needs. There is also an agency called Unity House, but we went with Racker Center.

Hmm, well I don't know your son, but saying that he NEVER will be independent can become a self-fufilling prophecy. If he has a mind to be independent and you have the right supports in place- and he builds his skills over time I think it is possible for a very great number of spectrum ppl to be independent in their own ways. Unfortunately I personally am unfamiliar with that area- but good luck!
