My speech is really only affected when I'm highly stressed. My mouth freezes and refuses to produce words, and when I try to force it, all that comes out is stuttered word fragments or noises. When this happens, I get even more stressed, so it becomes even harder to speak, and it's all just a tiring cycle. Under normal circumstances, the only trouble I have with speaking is being heard. I was born premature and so was intubated for many months until I could breathe on my own. The prolonged intubation left me with a scarred larynx, so I sound very quiet and raspy, like I have permanent laryngitis. Because of this, people have a hard time hearing me, and I constantly have to repeat myself, which gets annoying fast.

I stuttered horribly as a child but it got much better around the teen years. I will still do it though when I get too tired, stressed or anxious. Personally, I just don't like to speak unless it's to family or someone close to me.

I went to speech paths in my childhood and later took radio announcing for recommended thearapy, nowdays I don't seem to have much trouble with pronouciations, but I still often get asked to "speak up", usually in cases where I'm trying to answer questions I don't really know anything about.
I can occasionally get tongue-tied and when that happens it's usually in big-time proportions where I'll have to stop and chill before I can go on. The worst example I can recall was back in the late 1980's where I was trying to cut a radio spot for Popeye's Chicken which had just recently arrived in the Sacramento area. I remember the copy began with something like, "Popeye's Chicken is waging Cajun flavour all over the River City!" Man I got stuck on those three stupid words and it took me umpteen runs before I got anything out of my mouth that even made a lick of sense. By the time I got to a "keeper" I think I would have strangled the clown that wrote that script if I knew who it was.

I have a speech disorder, and am currently in speech therapy which is really embarrassing. Something about misusing the muscles in the throat, so they squeeze together tightly and sometimes I can't get my voice to make it through the clenched muscles. I do this involuntarily and subconsciously. Its often worse if I'm stressed, am aware I need to speak up which makes me try to speak louder which clenches the muscles tighter, or dysphoric.
It's better if I'm relaxed, don't need to speak loudly, and can consciously relax the throat and try to just let it happen naturally. I hate it though because speaking softly, which I don't have any other choice but to do, is often taken as timidity or weakness, neither of which describes me at all. It's a mechanical problem due to autism and gender issues, not a sign of emotional meekness. Grr.

Carcard: Maybe you could send pictures.

Then, if you are able, add some words to the picture.

Many people here think in pictures also.

I had huge problems with stuttering until age 10. My speech may be confusing as I have significant ideational dyspraxia.

I was in speech therapy till I started high-school cuz I had problems pronouncing certain sounds like S, Z, CH, SH, PH, & TH. I had problems with stuttering & slurring when I was on antipsychotics & occasionally when I was stressed due to a tremor disorder that can affect my voice.

I have difficulty with putting ideas into words, poor vocabulary, poor word retrieval, selective mutism and I often mispronounce words.
