Like several posters above I tend to imagine I am speaking to the person's avatar.

Trouble with that is if the avatar is a good looking male rock star the person is almost always a girl.

And if the avatar is a hot female supermodel the person is usually a male.

You're definitely prettier than that :D

(not that the hands aren't attractive in and of themselves).

i imagine kraftie flirts with the women in his day to day life as often as he does here.

I never saw the point of avatars when I first came to this site, and it used to irritate me a bit when people were always referring to them and joking about them. But they definitely give one something to relate to, and in many cases they might provide us with a clue about a poster's personality or interests.

My first reaction to Lab Pet's avatar was to think of a certain Alfred Hitchcock film from the early 1960s.....

I too think of people as their avatar, if it is human. Otherwise the avatar can depict a kind of humour, irony or conviction and thus tell something about that person - or play on identity.
Only in some cases, I can form a concrete picture of the person....and it probably isn´t correct anyway :)
