My step grandfather was a heavy equipment mechanic in Minnesota, and he said one of these babies lost a tire and it rolled into the woods; it went back very far, I forgot the distance now. He said " it took off into the woods and kept going and going."

He once commented on those scrappers, you know those loud two-stroke diesels, with the hinged steering front cab, had got stuck in the mud and the suction wouldn't allow an extraction. He said, " it's considered totaled" as it is permanently entombed.

Funds are on deposit, and delivery is scheduled for tomorrow 8O !

We did a lot of thinking and calculating, and it actually makes sense at this point... I lined up two experienced operators who will, over time, train me and also operate the machine in more tricky situations. Just so as not to scare anybody that a crazy Aspie is getting loose with a 53,000-lb bulldozer, I have good skills and experience with all kinds of large and dangerous machinery, and a decent education on physics and geology, so I'm not going to get myself in trouble, LOL... I'm not going to climb into it and do things that I'm not yet trained to do correctly and safely  .

This is the exact model, but not the actual machine we bought:

We had the machine delivered yesterday... It looks WELL-used, but there is only surface rust, so a few dozen hours with the sanding wheel, and a few coats of new Caterpillar-Federal Safety Yellow paint, and a new set of decals (on order), and it will look as good as it runs well! Mechanically, as far as I can tell, it's in very good repair. Tension on the tracks is still adjustable, and the Cat mechanic rated the machine at 60% undercarriage life (meaning that it has been used about 40% of the time before an overhaul is due). For my purposes, that's about 200 years, LOL. There is a Diesel fuel leak, probably from the injector pump, so I might have to pull that out and rebuild it. That would be expensive normally, but I have enough experience on Diesel pumps to do that job fine myself.

This has to be the ultimate Aspie impulsive special interest acquisition, but believe it or not, it does make business sense. We would have had to hire a machine and operator at $1000/day for at least a week total, to do what is needed here, and we got a very VERY good buy on this machine. So that means that basically, we will save $6000-$8000 in contract labor, and we can still sell this machine for at least what we paid, and only be out the tax & maintenance, which we carefully pencilled out to be sure there aren't any bad surprises.

I am. I'm obsessed with diggers, rollers and cement trucks.

Possibly so, but just be sure nobody goes cowboying that thing around. I have changed a lot of rollers and pins in my day, and those tracks are intended to work "straight ahead" and will not last long at all if somebody starts doing hard turns under heavy load.

Keep us posted!
