why are you so quiet?

Sometimes i shrug my shoulders (and say nothing). Sometimes I say "Because I've got nothing to say."

"Oh, just lost in thought!"

Something like that. It's often true, too.

Yep, though It hasn't come up in a while.
It's many of the same reasons noted by previous posters.
Not knowing what to say,not really interested by the conversations,lost in thought.it can get worse when there is a woman I'm attracted to or someone with a loud aggressive personality around .

I do find it very confusing to enter a conversation. When i try, it's considered rude and people either get angry or dismiss my rudeness because I'm a little odd. But the same people interrupt me all the time if I pause for a breath, or even not. It feels like a total double standard, but there's some intricacy that I am missing.

So, I do try to sit there and remind myself to STFU. If it's a business phone call that has a text side-channel, sometimes I'll text the call leader and say I have something to say and s/he will let me in without having to broach interrupting the flow myself.

Honestly its because I'm not really interested in having a conversation with anyone, I can't stand smalltalk, I'd rather just keep to myself and get the work done so I can go the f*ck back home. Unless the conversation is about cars then I'm not interested, I love meeting fellow car guys so we can chat for hours on end about my favourite subject.

Here's a good response:

"Why are you so blabby? You prattle on and on about meaningless BS that nobody cares about! Do you just babble to hear yourself talk?"

I get asked this a lot. Unless it's an obsession I currently have or interest. I usually just give them a blank stare. I suck at small talk and sometimes I'm to anxious about screwing up a conversation.

I'm NT and I find this question completely rude and inappropriate. I've never been asked this question, but I've heard it asked to others.

That seems to be the case rather often, actually. I think it has something to do with the Internet putting less social pressure on people, in a sense.

Because I don't want to bore or scare people by talking about my special interests. That's what my answer is in a work setting. If I talk about some of my interests I could get fired and I've also had it drummed into my head that it's wrong for me to talk about my interests.

I think it's all about context and how the question is phrased. The general politicaly correct rule of thumb is you don't ask prying questions about people's disabilties so I think if someone asks you why your quiet there could be a good chance that they don't see you as having issues so don't see it as rude , but the world is full of rude and inappropriate people.
