Do you need silence to read/study?

A nice droning background, like sitting far off to the side of a place with enough people that individual voices can't be discerned, or the wind/rain/frogs/crickets/waves is perfect b/c I can tune it out and in doing so greatly increase my focus on what I'm doing.
I find that a very low level background noise can be very relaxing. Yigeren wrote:
If I'm hyperfocusing, then I won't notice the noise. But first I must reach that point where I am super-focused. It will take a while, but I'll lock onto whatever it is I'm studying or reading, and only really be aware of what I'm doing, instead of my surroundings.
Sometimes I never can focus, because what I'm reading is too boring .
The same holds true for me, in both instances.
Sometimes I never can focus, because what I'm reading is too boring .

Yes! 99% of the time I will choose to have silence, but sometimes I will slip into a state of hyperfocus where I don't even notice that there is noise around me.

It's funny. At home, I usually read/study with music on.
But when I go to the library to read, I prefer when it's relatively silent. Surprisingly enough, it rarely is! Many people at the library just talk or have phone calls. The librarians don't do much to impose the rules either.
