I have pretty poor hygeine with the exception of brushing my teeth regularly (daily). Flossing is more difficult...

I know just recently a thread has been started here on hygiene, but I wanted to have my own. Ok so, I don't have any sensory issues so none of this is because of that. I shower like once a week, down from twice a week because I just don't care and basically fell off the wagon and I also wear the same underwear the whole time, with a new pantyliner everyday. My mindset is if I don't feel, or smell dirty, I don't need to wash myself and no one has been able to change that. My parents could never get me to care about hygiene or see the need to change. (I'm 21 now). I brush my teeth once a day, and some nights have even skipped due to laziness, I don't floss because I don't want to have to spend time on that. I'm not interested in friends or a relationship so therefor it doesn't matter if I drives others away. If my underarms smell, I wipe them with a baby wipe. Even if I've been out and sweaty I let it dry on me. None of this makes me feel nasty in any way. Back when I was in school, my parents forced me to at least wash up at the sink every night for school. For me, it's not about forgetting about hygiene, it's about being totally apathetic. even if my parents told me to do it, I would say it's not necessary. None of the stuff that's supposed to work to get me to have better hygiene has ever worked. As they say, you can't make someone care about something they don't care about. (my parents have tried, but failed every time). I could probably go even longer than a week if it weren't for my hair REALLY needing to be washed after that time. I couldn't care less what society thinks of my hygiene. I don't feel dirty, I don't feel gross. No one can convince me that it's necessary when I don't feel dirty. I think it's a waste of time.

Hello! I don't understand this. Why not wash up? I know that you don't feel dirty vs clean, but what about the people around you. Also a shower takes like five minutes. I can't grasp the idea of "it's ok to be dirty." No offense. I just know someone who is autisic and doesn't care for himself. He is dirty MOST OF THE TIME. I don't understand it And I get that it's not my business, but others can possibly smell you. A baby wipe won't wipe away the funk from a week old pair of undies. What I'm saying is not to be mean, but I just don't understand it because it makes me sad when I see the person I know walking around dirty.

I have always found that if for some reason I go a few days without a shower, I don't tend to feel any different, unless it's really hot weather and my hair's gone greasy and I feel sticky. But even if I feel the same - once I've had a shower I can definitely tell the difference!
I do still have to push myself to do it though, frustratingly. I think a mix of the fact that I find no matter how quick I try to be, by the time I've dried and everything, about half an hour has gone - so for some reason I'm nowhere near as quick as most people seem to be. My other issue is that I really hate the sensation of being wet and especially of having water hitting me. I'm OK if I'm submersed in the water - like in a bath or swimming pool. But then when I get out I NEED to get dry as fast as possible. I remember when I first met my fiancee - she commented that if we were out and it started raining I looked like I was being murdered, I looked so unhappy lol! So of course, knowing that sensation is coming never really enthuses me to the idea much...

Until I was about 13, I only took a bath once a week (at the most).

Nowadays, I take a shower virtually every day. If I don't take a shower, my hair starts getting greasy and my eyes start stinging because of my sweat.

I find it rather disgusting when people walk around stinking to high heaven.

^^^QFT. when I don't have to be anywhere around people, I have been known to reek. but I will NOT stink when I'm around others, that is just the plain golden rule. I've been around unwashed types that made me wanna hurl and I would not inflict that olfactory punishment on others.

I do hate cleaning my teeth. But I force myself to do it every day because I don't want to end up as someone with bad breath.

I change my underwear every day, so I have countless pairs of socks and pants in my drawers. That way loads could be in the wash and I still have plenty of pairs.

I usually have a bath every night. I enjoy soaking in a bubble bath. It calms my nerves.

One of my special interests is soap - bars, liquid and detergent powders. I still get happy rubbing a bar of soap and it gets bubbly. :D The rest of my autistic family aren't crazy about soap like I do, but they are sensitive to smells like I am, so everyone is very keen about being clean. We seem to go through enormous amount of soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and dental floss (I'm the worst because I love flossing). I do laundry everyday so we're always clean and sweet smelling. I did push the kids a bit when establishing the routine, then they stick to those routines like their lives depend on them. :D

*BTW I don't think there's anything wrong about bathing once a week. Brushing teeth is more important.

Medicare allows one shower per adult in care homes per week. When I was young and growing up in the 1950s, it was very common for people to have a 'weekly bath' . Women went to the hairdresser once a week and did not shampoo between times to keep from ruining the 'set'. So much of the " whoop de doo" about bathing is a cultural issue.
If you are not stinky and breeding bacteria and yeast and sores, etc, from long- standing not bathing, there is nothing unhealthy about going a while between cleanings!

problem comes about because "your mileage may vary" - some of us need to bathe every daggone day or else we WILL STINK." and not just a little bit. body chemistry varies greatly among us.

Wow, a threat from 2015, seven years ago.

I read a book called Whole Brain Living by Jill Bolte Taylor. Around the age of 35 she suffered a major stroke and came back to life as a totally different person. Before the stroke she was an upcoming medical professional. After the stroke she came back as a new age woman. The book describes her experience. I think there is a lot of important information to be gleaned from this book.

If you look at the human brain, you will quickly see that there are two halves. The left side is the main half that controls people. But the right side is what is very different. Each half of the brain has two personalities. One of the personalities on the right side she describes as Pigpen (from the characters invented by Charles Schulz in his series called Peanuts.

Yes I know this piece of my right side brain. It allows me to do the impossible things in life.

When I was young and in my early 20s, I use to go on nature walks. I was a member of the Sierra Club and that is what we did. One of the walks was a 5 day hick through the hills of Mexico. There were 50 of us. The first day was hiking straight up a mountain. Living in the woods for a week without access to most things in life was interesting. I sweated a lot in the hick but at the same time taking a bath was not possible. You might say that I STUNK.

There is one thing about stinking that is IMPORTANT. As my body developed sweat that dried all over me, this dried sweat protected me from insects. THEY WANTED NO PART OF ME. It made me immune from insect bites.

I virtually never shower anymore. I just swab my groin with rubbing alcohol and spray my armpits with it. Sometimes I add some aftershave to the alcohol I have in a spray bottle. I don't think I've ever had much of a body odor problem. I don't prespire much. I wear a cap to hide my hair which looks as one might expect.

Yes the alcohol stings my nether regions, but I have pretty good pain tolerance.

Sorry if TMI but you didn't have to read my post.
