I was diagnosed in1985, when I was 5, with MBD (minimal brain dysfunction). It was a popular diagnosis here in Scandinavia at that time, but it's not used anymore. It's kind of like" well, we know SOMETHING is wrong in the kid's brain, but we can't specify what" The best way to explain it is that it's a mix between autism spectrum and ad(h)d. I got diagnosed with Asperger in 2001 and Add a few years later.

Exactly, Heidi.

Same with me, with the "Brain-damaged" label given to me in 1965.

By 1985, "minimal brain dysfunction" was falling out of style. People previously diagnosed with MBD were, for the most part, being diagnosed with ADD by 1985 in the US.

It was still relatively rare to diagnose someone with MBD/ADD-type symptoms with autism, since autism was still a one-dimensional disorder in 1985.

Low-functioning autism spectrum disorder at the age of 4.
Now: high-functioning autism

The waters of the port were choppy. After I set off, there was a long, massive storm.
Years later, however, the sea calmed. I'm still on tranquil sea, but I'll never reach the Neurotypical Beach.

At age 16 years, I was diagnosed first with "Manic-Depressive Illness, Depressed Type" (DSM-II). I received four additional depression diagnoses during the following five years. I didn't believe them then, and I don't believe them now. They were, in my opinion, the best diagnostic "fit" for my then-unrecognized autism.
