It would be very efficient and we would flap our hands on board.

There'd have to be a navigator who is focused, and who is able to find sandbars, even if they're not on a map.

Crew is not an engineering feature.

I disagree. Human factors need to be considered in the design of the human machine interface. The systems can also be engineered to rely heavily on a crew or the crew can be engineered out of the systems altogether via automation.

To put it another way, people are not engineered; spaces, facilities, and functions are.

I am an electrical engineer. I design systems with standard interfaces. Whether you disagree with me or not is irrelevant.

I'm still waiting for someone to take up the topic of salary ...

There is no salary. This project has no sponsor so there is no funding. It's only in the thought experiment stage.

Train crews are engineered. ;-)

Hmmm.....

Are you saying that the crew (and autistic passengers) would stick their hands into the water to power the ship like galley slaves by exploiting their hand flapping compulsions to paddle the ship through the water?

That would be a novel way to harness the nervous energy of folks who stim.

Instead of sticking your hands in the water maybe you could have the gunnels of the ship lined with little hand cranks. So if anyone on board gets the urge to stim that could just grab a hand crank and the crank would be connected to some kind of battery charging thing in the engine room to store the energy for latter use in helping to power the ship.

I’m sort of partial to fission power myself. You only need to stop for fuel every 30 years which is really nice. The down side of fission power is that you need a half billion dollars of additional engineering and support facilities for fuel and waste handling and storage. I’m not paying though so I don’t care.

If I get to choose the engine in my car, I’m going with the big engine. If we are speaking of ship propulsion systems, the big engine is the BWR. Go big or go home!

<--- Votes for poopy power. Aren't they devising some way to turn poop into fuel?

Yes, but that would be like a 20hp Prius and I'll have no part in that.
