My understanding is that AS and HFA are not the same thing, while AS is a kind of HFA.

So what traits differ AS from just HFA?

If diagnosed, are both labeled ASD?

Yeah, I'm no expert on the matter but I think that Aspergers basically is high functioning autism. I know for a fact that aspergers is diagnosed under Autism Spectrum Disorder. Don't take my word for it but that's my two cents.

This is definitely not a statement of authority. It is not something which is conclusive. It is merely sort of an outline.

The distinction between the two, in simple terms, is often said to lie in the following:

1. If one is Aspergian, one is relatively proficient in the verbal realm, and relatively weak in the visual-spatial realm.

2. If one is HFA, one is relatively proficient in the visual-spatial realm, and relatively weak in the verbal realm.

I, myself, even though I would never have been diagnosed with Asperger's because of my extreme speech delay, exhibit an Aspergian profile--in that my Verbal IQ scores, consistently, are much superior to my Performance IQ scores. The difference has lessened over the years. But when I was 15, I took the Weschler (spelling?) test, and scored 150 Verbal, 90 Performance.

The only actual difference I know of is that people with HFA had a speech delay during childhood and Aspies did not. But there are a few different theories out there.

What is visual-spatial?

In your opinion, would you consider my verbal skills adequate? There might be another influencing factor like the fact that English is not my native tongue, but it is my primary language.

As far as I know I started speaking on time.

Visual-spatial is how proficient you are in tasks which require the use of your vision.

When one thinks of spatial, in simplest terms, one thinks of a person's "coordination." It is frequently said that people with Asperger's have difficulty in physical coordination, and are "late" in such things as tying shoelaces.

On the other hand, it is sometimes stated that people with HFA have decent physical coordination, perhaps even superior physical coordination. And that they are "visual learners." They, supposedly, don't learn well when traditional academic methods are used in instruction.

I would you that you are proficient in English. You English grammar is decent. You convey ideas well.

What is your first language?

Looks like poor motor skills are a requirement for AS.

I'm extremely clumsy. I can't catch anything for example. If you were to throw something at the level of my head, I will reach to grab, but it will probably just hit me in the face. I won't even dodge the thing right.

I have an awkward posture and I walk weird.

Rollerblades and skateboards were out of the question in my childhood. I could barely ski, but instructor said I had a very strange pose and technique. I had more than usual difficulty learning to ride a bicycle, and I can't say I ride particularly well.

I'm from a place in Europe. I'll leave it at that.

Physical clumsiness is not "required" for Asperger's.

But it occurs with relative frequency in people with Asperger's.

Relatively rarely in people with HFA.

I was diagnosed with aspergers with a poor verbal IQ. Is that the same? My diagnoses was later changed to compensate for the DSM V update.

How was your IQ dealing with the blocks, and with math?

I really get the feeling, as I think about it, Zombie, that you do have good verbal abilities---but anxiety severely inhibits you in being able to make use of that verbal ability.

My verbal abilities aren't a opinion, it was a diagnoses given to me, after a series of test it showed significant struggles processing verbal information and difficulties with speech. It has nothing to do with anxiety. Second, you don't know me, you can't know my verbal abilities.

Now wait a second...did I ever say that I "know" you.

I just gave an impression. That's all

There was no need for that.

I thought we got along.

I took the asvab in high school and was told I tested high in mechanics/electronics.....go figure as I can't put stuff together....these tests don't tell the whole story. Lousy coordination, forget about me roller skating, tennis or dancing.

Great speller but only because I have a stellar memory. I don't know all the rules per say that dictate how words are spelled.

Photographic memory, scent memory.I have no idea what my official profile is.
