Being on meds does help keep this sort of thing under control for me, but before I went on them (which was over 2 years ago), I had outbursts that involved me hitting myself in the head and face with my hands because of being so angry with myself.

I'm certainly the same. I sometimes have meltdowns so bad that I will slap myself or hit my head against my knees or hands as hard as I can repeatedly, usually as a literal "I need to beat myself up" thing. Sometimes it's simply because I don't know what else to do and can't express it calmly. I finally broke down the other night and told my wife how I secretly do it, she told me since I'm not on meds right now she'll do her best to help, but the key is actually being able to tell her when I need help.

One of the only other things that stops myself from physically abusing myself like that is the thought that I don't want to leave any lasting damage. I just do it for the shock of it, but sometimes I go too far and can break capillaries, bruise, or even cut myself from too much abuse.

I had a particularly bad meltdown last year where I banged my head against the floor and stabbed myself a number of times with a pair of scissors.

I always suffer from depression after a bad meltdown where I continue to mentally beat myself up for not being able to control myself better.

I think my worst one was around 4 years ago, I smashed up a load of furniture and then got a chair leg and smashed a 500 quid tv to pieces, ripped a door off it's hinges, then cut up my legs with a kitchen knife, lying on the floor screaming and headbutting the floor. I'm sure I would have been sectioned if that was witnessed by anyone but my boyfriend at the time.

Actually the worst head banging episode i had wasnt a meltdown, i was just stimming.i ended up hitting my head on a window edge and split my head open and blead and got a concussion.

My worst meltdown was what started my diagnoses process- i tried to stab my sister and then tried to tuen the knife on myself, when i came to my senses the police were on their way and my sister slapped me hard in the face. I was arrested, sent to a hospital and starred my evaluations the next day.

I remember going absolutely ballistic in my teens because there was constant renovation being done in the house next door all week in the day and then several nights a week the foreign hotel workers across the street had raving parties with the windows wide open, I was trynna study for exams and I already had a terrible time at school and didn't have many releases to let off steam and no idea about mental stuff, I literally threw the furniture around about six times in a month and went awol just wandering around pitch black streets getting a chippy and reading a book in a serene park or something, if I didn't go wandering I would've smashed their bloody windows, I was half a nutcase growing up!

I've always thought like self harm w sharp objects is different to meltdown which for me is headbanging / hitting myself on objects, loss of speech and screaming... but now that I think about it, perhaps they are not so dissimilar.

I stabbed myself with a knife when I was at boarding school because this guy I called 'my boyfriend' (he wasn't) 'dumped me'.

I was suspended and saw a totally useless psychiatrist to whom I did not or maybe just could not talk.

Sounds like you're English?

Yeah renovations completely do my head in. I used to go wandering in the night too but no chippys were open sadly

My worst meltdown involves a broken cubicle stall door, and a ripped up uniform shirt of a bully...

I never harmed myself in any meltdowns. I never knew why, 8O but it's certainly had nothing to do with lack of clumsiness.

Self harm? Mine just involves making my finger bleed, and have something stinging on it. Nothing else or any worse.
