I find myself getting off track in the middle of homework, reading, or painting by needing to run around or pace. It won't happen in public, but when I'm alone it's so easy to jump from thought to thought - and before I know it, I'm pacing and skipping and thinking!

Yes and I will just suddenly realize that I've been spaced out staring and stimming instead of whatever I was supposed to be doing. I have done it in public too though usually my stimming is subtle and not that obvious. It's more that I get so spaced out I lose track of what's going on around me.

It happens all the time for me.

I'll do this, usually with rocking.

Yes but often I am stoned when I do. So it's hard to tell what's causing that. I can lose myself for hours biting my nails stoned or not.

No, my stimming doesn't interrupt my activities....it just happens while I do my activities. I think I just stop when I need to use my hands or when I need to move/position my body in a way that isn't compatible with rocking.

Yep! But then at some point I realize I'm going it, realize I've interrupted what I was trying to do, and think about why I need to stim right then. Something is usually out of balance between outside and inside stimulus. I try to balance out whatever it was, and often can then continue with whatever it was I was originally doing. And sometimes balancing it means stopping and just stimming for a bit. I am a master of Wundtian introspection.
