My current thing is reading about Anarchism, which I've just started on but had a bit of a Amazon/Kindle buying spree :)

Also, my usual film obsession: horror, sci-fi, exploitation, video-nasties blu-rays and dvds. I have a lovely home cinema system to play them on and love reading books about them.

Others include: free-diving, climbing, archery, foraging, light-weight camping, music (punk, hardcore, jazz, folk, classical).

They all rotate every now and then with film being a constant.

CockneyRebel,

I like the Olympics, too. I have written books about the various track events. None were ever published, but I loved doing the research.

I would say my greatest obsession, or inspiration, has come lately from stories of people who achieved despite great odds against them and those who achieved things nobody thought possible. Denis Istomin falls into both categories, as do both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal this year. Age and experience won out over brash youth at the Australian Open.

1. Self Improvement (currently talking and calisthenics)
2. John Frusciante
3. Puzzle solving
4. Weird/cool animals
5. A love interest (always changes over time, but I seem to need to have some girl on my mind)

Ultimately, the 2017 AO has been a Major Triumph (pun intended) because my favorite players both made the final and Denis Istomin made the fourth round, putting to rest the claims of those who said they were old and past their prime. Roger Federer won his 18th Major championship at the age of 35 after a layoff of six months due to injury and Rafael Nadal made the final after a four month injury layoff at 30. Denis Istomin, also 30, equaled his best showing at a major. We haven't seen the last of any of them yet1

Longest running obsession:

As long as I could remember, I have been interested in learning about different countries. Those I studied in depth include:

Japan
Spain
Argentina
Ethiopia (because of the famous Olympic long-distance runners from that country)
Ukraine
Greece
Russia
Serbia
Uzbekistan (because of Denis Istomin)

My interest in a certain country usually stems from an interest in a famous person from that country

Over the past three years, my obsession has been my appearance. It's taken that long for me to realise how unbelievably shallow, vain and self-centered centered I have been. I guess I have been trying to control one aspect of my miserable life, albeit an immaterial one.
